Known around the barn as "Iggy," the striking Danish pinto stands out in a sea of bay and chestnut hunters. His unique coloring draws compliments from fellow competitors and spectators alike, but according to Samuels, it's what's behind those colorful markings that makes him truly special.

"He's a very goofy, untemperamental horse," said Samuels about Iggy’s personality. "He's so calm, and he's so willing to work and do everything. He's just an amazing horse and easy to work with."

The 2012 gelding (Churchill x Padega) has been Samuels' partner for the past three years. Their story began when she was searching for a horse after a lease on another horse was up. Her trainer sent her a video of Iggy, and the pair met for the first time at Brownland Farm in Franklin, Tennessee.

"We went and tried him out, and I immediately fell in love with him," she recalled. The connection was instant, and since then, Brownland has become a familiar stop on their show calendar each year.

While Iggy's eye-catching appearance often earns compliments around the show grounds, Samuels says people are equally drawn to his kind demeanor.

"Walking around the horse show, I'll get a lot of, 'Oh my gosh, I love your horse,' or 'He's colored so beautifully,'" she said. "He's just an angel."

Despite his compact frame, Iggy, who stands at 16.1 ¼ hands in height, continues to surprise people in the ring. One of his most unexpected qualities is the size of his stride.

"He looks a lot bigger and heftier than he actually is," said Samuels. "He just has a really big, lofty stride."

At home and at competitions, Iggy combines talent with a personality that keeps everyone entertained. When asked what celebrity he would be if he were a human, Samuels didn't hesitate: "Cardi B," she laughed. "He's a little sassy, but he's amazing."

Together, the pair is set to compete in the 2026 Adequan/USEF Junior Hunter Championship – East at the Kentucky Horse Park this week, where Samuels plans to focus on consistency in their rounds, maintaining a harmonious partnership, and continual improvement.

"My goal with him this year is to have really good, clean rounds and be able to work well with him," she explained. "To reset after every jump and keep going around the course well."

Samuels first discovered horses at the age of eight, after her parents purchased riding lessons through a school auction. What started as a new activity quickly became a passion. She attended summer camps, worked as a student at a local Wentzville, Missouri barn, and eventually transitioned into showing.

That hands-on foundation helped shape the rider she is today, but it's horses like Iggy that continue to fuel her love of the sport.

Whether he's turning heads with his distinctive markings, impressing judges with his stride, or enjoying his favorite molasses-and-oat treats with peppermint centers, Iggy has become much more than a competitive partner. He's Samuels’ trusted teammate, a barn favorite, and proof that sometimes the horse who stands out the most isn't just memorable because of how he looks; it's because of who he is.
