Phillip Dutton began riding horses on his family farm while growing up in Australia. He moved to the U.S. in 1991 to prepare for the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games and continued representing his native country until 2006, when he became a U.S. citizen. Dutton has been a mainstay on U.S. teams ever since. Dutton has competed in multiple Olympic Games since 1996, winning team gold with Australia in 1996 and 2000, and as a member of the U.S. team in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. He has competed in seven FEI World Equestrian Games, representing the U.S. for the first time in 2006. Dutton resides in Pennsylvania with his wife Evie, twin daughters, Mary and Olivia, and stepdaughter Lee Lee. Denim, a 2015 Holsteiner gelding, owned by Ann Jones, Ann Lapides, Caroline Moran, and Neill Sites, joined Dutton’s stable in 2022 after beginning his career with Merel Blom-Hulsman in the Netherlands. Dutton and Denim have had over fifteen FEI starts including over ten top 10 placings. In 2022, the pair finished in the top 10 in the CCI3*-L at the FEI Eventing World Championship for Young Horses in Le Lion-d’Angers, France. Denim made his U.S. Team debut after being named to the Boekelo CCIO4*-NC-L Defender U.S. Eventing Team in 2023. In 2025, Denim was named as the individual horse with Dutton for the CHIO Aachen CCIO4*-S Squad.
