More Than Two-Dozen American Saddlebreds Perish in Barn Fire

A barn fire killed 25 American Saddlebreds and one half-Saddlebred at 3-T Stables, owned by the Tabor family in Scottsville, KY, on the morning of Tuesday, June 19. By the time the fire was noticed just before 7 a.m. at 3-T’s broodmare barn, it had become a “raging inferno,” according to 3-T Stables’ Paige Tabor. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. Former editor and owner of The National Horseman Raymond E. Sheffield of Louisville, KY, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY. Sheffield began his career with The National Horseman in 1950, accepting a position as its advertising manager. The owner/publisher at the time, Henry Brown, groomed Sheffield to be his replacement, and when Brown died in 1955, Sheffield became editor and owner.
