Competition Gets Underway in Harrisburg with Taylor Cawley and Klaartje Z Taking Phase I in the Turnham Green/USEF Junior Jumper National Championships

Harrisburg, Pa. - The Turnham Green/USEF Junior Jumper National Championships kicked off today with Phase I of the Individual Championships, the $5,000 Turnham Green/USEF Prix des States Welcome Class, held in the historic Harrisburg Coliseum at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. A field of 27 athlete and horse combinations contested the1.35m course, with faults-converted, to open the three-day championship competition.

Taylor Cawley (Wellington, Fla.) and Klaartje Z, a 2014 Belgian Sport Horse mare (Kannan x Dancing Queen) owned by Team Philippaerts and Familie Lens, started the weekend off strong, capturing the first win of the championship after stopping the clock in 58.03. Following closely behind, was Michaela Munson (Rogers, Ark.) piloting Charlene, a 2008 Holsteiner mare (Clarimo x Raja II) owned by Genevieve Munson, to second place with a time of 59.24 seconds. Rounding out the top three finishers were Izzy Beisel (Goshen, Ohio) and Diaz Barboteire, her own 2013 Selle Francais gelding (Messire Ardent x Quambera Barbotiere), after crossing the finish in a time of 59.25 seconds.  

Cawley credited the success of their round to her mount, Klaartje Z. “She’s so competitive and fast,” she said. “I’ve really enjoyed learning from her these past few months. I am so happy with how she was in the indoor atmosphere. She felt amazing today.” 

Competition continues tomorrow evening with Phase II of the Individual Championship and the main Team Championship, known as the Prix des States. The team competition follows a modified Nations Cup format, with athletes representing their respective USHJA Zones over a course set at 1.40m in height. Combinations will jump two rounds, and the team finishing with the lowest number of faults will stand atop the podium the podand have their names engraved on the Francis Newbill Rowe Perpetual Trophy.
