Wilhelm Genn of Lebanon, OH, cleaned house at Horse Shows by the Bay Series II by winning both the $10,000 Open Jumper Welcome Prix and the $25,000 Grand Traverse Bay Grand Prix on Happy Z and Chantal, respectively. Grand Prix Ring Designer Pierre Joliceur’s course produced four clean rounds out of 22 in Friday afternoon’s (July 21) Welcome Prix. Genn guided Happy Z to the win by skimming all of the turns and jumping diagonally across several of the verticals, beating out Quendo and Erin Haas of Chelsea, MI, by over 2.5 seconds. “I am very pleased with this mare...she’s won a lot for me this season,” remarked Genn after the victory gallop and winner’s presentation.

Genn returned to the winner’s circle in Sunday’s Grand Prix by placing first on Chantal, third on Ariado and fifth on Happy Z. Genn’s students also claimed victory in the jumper ring by winning and placing second in the $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic.

In the main hunter ring, it was Boggs Hill’s clients who swept the weekend hunter divisions as Carol Cone and her two mounts, Glory Road and Harmony Bay, were victorious in the older adult hunter division, and Grand Slam Farm, LLC’s, ponies, Touch of Silver and Holland Hill, piloted by Rachel DeGabrielle, were crowned champion and reserve champion in the Medium Pony Hunters. Grand hunter titles went to Fellini (Caitlyn Ziegler, professional); Cologne (Don Graves, amateur owner); Glory Road (Cone, adult); Avalon (Katie Krinsky, children’s); Little Miss (Karla Kay Woch, pony); and Brown Eyed Girl (Sydney Turner, junior).

Hillside Farm and Friends sponsored the second annual “Hurricane Party,” featuring Dr. Kim Breautigam and his band “The Saucecats” Friday night. The New Orleans sound band jammed all night long to a crowd of “Sauce Kittens” dancing to tunes, including “Hot, Hot, Hot” and “Aiko, Aiko” among others.

The CANTER (Communication Alliance for Networking Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses) charity fundraiser on Saturday raised over $5,000 to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home horses in need. The silent auction and golf cart raffle were emceed and hosted by Robbie Timmons and Jim Brandstetter from Detroit, MI. Kodiak Equipment of Williamsburg, MI, donated the custom designed JEEP body golf cart, which was won by Michigan trainer Todd Neumann.

“CANTER is thrilled to be able to participate in such a prestigious horse show, and we look forward to returning next year for an even larger charity fundraiser,” said news anchor Timmons from W-XYZ, Detroit. Saturday’s events also included a comprehensive Kid’s Day, sponsored by Four Winds Equine Hospital, that offered a behind-the-scenes barn tour to local equestrian enthusiasts, a K9 agility demonstration provided by Northwest Classy K9 4H group, and a petting zoo hosted by the Leelanau 4H.
