Candice Reece is a second-generation Welsh breeder who grew up riding and showing breeding stock for her mother, Charlotte Upchurch. She also had the privilege of riding for Kathleen Voelkel, owner of Fieldstone Park. It was aboard their Welsh ponies that Candice gained her first national and international equestrian experience through the United States Pony Clubs (USPC). These early opportunities shaped her horsemanship and earned her a riding scholarship to William Woods University, where she graduated with a major in political science and a minor in equine studies.
Following college, Candice served with the Domestic Peace Corps, working with at-risk youth in South San Antonio and Comal County. After completing her service, she returned home to Fieldstone Park, where she has spent the past 16 years as an instructor, breeder, and trainer. Under her guidance, students have achieved success on both local and national circuits.
Candice’s expertise extends well beyond the arena. For more than a decade, she has managed a wide range of competitions at Fieldstone Park, including IEA, USHJA Outreach, WPCSA, and NTHJC shows. She has also served on her local hunter circuit’s Board of Directors, holding the position of Show Committee Chairman during the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 seasons. In these roles, Candice combined a deep knowledge of competition rules with a diplomatic, detail-oriented approach to show management.
While Candice and her students are frequent visitors to the winner’s circle, her true passion lies in her partnership with elite Welsh bloodlines. She has had the privilege of training and collaborating with Diamond K Welsh Ponies and Royal Oaks Welsh Warmbloods. A firm believer in the versatility, heart, and longevity of the breed, Candice proudly embraces the Welsh motto: “You never outgrow a Welsh.”
