A Leap of Faith, a Long Wait, and the Filly Who Made It Worth It

The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show draws thousands of horse enthusiasts, competitors, owners, and breeders from across the nation to Scottsdale, Arizona, for two weeks of celebrating the Arabian and Half-Arabian breeds. For the Glomski family, the show is a cherished tradition. What began as a family trip attending as spectators, has evolved into fulfilling their dream of competing with their homebred Arabian, Royal Tea HHF.

Their breeding journey began in 2018 at the Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeders Fall Festival. After much consideration, the family bid on breeding to a stallion. With the expert guidance of friend and role model, Gene LaCroix, Jennifer selected, and successfully bid on, VJ Royal Heir. After several unsuccessful attempts to breed to a lease mare, their breeding manager at Cedar Ridge Arabians, Mike Brennan, suggested trying one last option: his mare, Chai Tea BFV, who had previously only ever served as a recipient mare and never had her own foals. It was a chance they were willing to take.

“Mike suggested Chai Tea BFV because she is a Matoi granddaughter,” Jennifer said. “She got pregnant right away and ended up being the sweetest mare ever. We’re so grateful for her. She gave us the most special baby.”

That baby was Royal Tea HHF, affectionately known as “Jazzy.” She became the first horse the Glomski family ever bred, marking the start of a new chapter that will be remembered for generations.

“She was a very timid baby,” Jennifer recalled. “We would go and sit on buckets in her stall for hours just to get her comfortable with us being around her and teaching her to socialize.”

Jennifer’s husband, Todd, had never considered himself a ‘horsey person’ before Jazzy came along. To work closer with the mare, he and Jennifer took on the daily routine of going to the barn and turning her in and out.

“He was thrown in the deep end,” Jennifer said. “Here was this man who grew up in Michigan, had never been around horses, and is now confidently walking a baby horse up and down the barn aisle. It was really sweet to watch him bond with her.”

After spending her first couple of years growing up in the paddock, it was time for Jazzy to begin her formal training. The Glomski’s followed Laura Rodel down to Shino Training Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she thrived under Rodel’s and head trainer, Josh Shino’s, guidance and quickly proved herself to be a highly competitive show prospect.

At four years old, Jazzy made her debut and immediately turned heads. She was Region 1 Junior Horse Country English Pleasure Champion with Rodel. In 2024, Jennifer and Jazzy entered the show ring for the first time together at Scottsdale and secured Reserve Champion in the AEPA Conway Arabians $20,000 Arabian Country English Pleasure AOTR Maturity.

“It was amazing,” Jennifer said. “She really hit it out of the park. Laura is an incredible trainer, and you can tell she is truly invested in Jazzy.”

Part of the reason Rodel and Glomski chose Scottsdale was its prestige and commitment to incentive classes. It also represented something deeply personal, an old family dream that once felt far out of reach.

“It used to be quite the dream to show at Scottsdale,” Jennifer said. “We attended as a family just to watch, and now to having a horse we’ve bred competing there is amazing.”

At home, Jazzy is known for her quiet, laid-back personality. Dubbed the “napper” of the barn, she can often be found snoozing in her stall or out in the paddock. The grooms even keep a running collection of photos documenting her many napping positions, which they frequently share with the Glomskis.

But the moment Jazzy enters the show ring, she transforms. Gone is her mellow demeanor, and in its place is an enthusiastic horse that locks into performance mode.

“She loves showing,” said Jennifer’s daughter, Annie. “As soon as you hit the show ring, she lights up. She’s such a special girl.”

Showing Jazzy has become deeply meaningful for everyone involved, especially after Jennifer’s cancer diagnosis. Watching her return to the show ring with Jazzy has been both emotional and empowering.

“To be able to show her last year meant the world to me,” Jennifer said. “The journey we’ve been on together is incredible; I’m thrilled every time I get to be on her.”

Annie added, “My mom smiles the whole time she rides. It's an honor to watch her do her favorite thing in the world and ride a horse we all love so much.”

The love for Jazzy doesn’t stop with Annie and Jennifer. “It’s cute when I watch her with my dad,” Annie said. “When we’re watching Mom and Jazzy show, he’s always pacing because he’s so involved in it.”

That devotion was on full display when Jennifer and Jazzy won Reserve Champion at Scottsdale in 2024. Spectators watched as Todd leapt over the fence and hurried to the ring so he could be a part of the awards photo.

“We’re all so proud of this little horse we’ve bred,” Annie said.

The future looks bright for Jazzy as she continues highlighting her talent in different arenas across the country. Annie plans to join her mother as one of Jazzy’s riders, carrying on the deep history and love their family has built around the mare.

“She’s so talented,” Annie said. “It’s awesome to think we’ve had this mare since day one. I have pictures of me holding her in my lap the day she was born. It's special to know that we bred her and to continue her story.”

The Glomskis hope to one day breed Jazzy herself, continuing the line of legacy that started with a faith in a quiet mare and has since grown into something truly unforgettable.
