Did you get a reminder to take your SafeSport Training refresher course? The refresher is quick and easy, and completing the course ensures that an adult competing member can continue to participate in USEF-licensed competitions as an owner, athlete, or trainer.

You’ll find additional information and resources about SafeSport Training and USEF’s Safe Sport Policy—including SafeSport Training FAQs—on the Safe Sport page at usef.org.

Here’s what you need to know:

Who is required to take the SafeSport Training and annual refresher course?

Any USEF competing member aged 18 or older (based on actual birthdate) is required to take the SafeSport Training, including amateurs, professionals, juniors who are 18 and older, and owners who have an annual, three-year, or lifetime membership. Others required to take the SafeSport Training include: USEF licensed officials, chefs d’equipe, staff, board members, competition management, coaches, human physios, farriers, trainers, veterinarians, and selectors hired or contracted by USEF. The SafeSport Training requirement does not apply to USEF fan members or USEF competing members under the age of 18 (based on actual birthdate).

It’s free.

There is no cost for USEF members to take either the initial SafeSport Training or the refresher course.

The refresher course is short.

The refresher course takes about 15-20 minutes.

SafeSport Training keeps our equestrian community and sports safer for all participants.

Creating a healthy, supportive, and safe community for our athletes—especially our youngest athletes—is our top priority. USEF has had a Safe Sport Policy and program since 2013 and continues to provide resources, support, and reporting mechanisms for all members.

By taking SafeSport Training and championing athlete safety in our sport, you’re joining a broad movement across equestrian and many other sports that is rooted in the guiding principle that children deserve our protection. We all have a role to play to ensure our athletes—especially our youngest ones—are safe.

Who has mandated SafeSport Training?

The SafeSport Training program is mandated by Congress for all 50 Olympic sports. Over the past year, USEF has worked to implement federally-mandated SafeSport policies aimed at protecting youth in sport. This effort and its policies are overseen and managed by the U.S. Center for SafeSport, which ensures compliance across all national governing bodies. All of our members, except fan members and members under the age of 18, are required to participate in the course annually from age 18 onward. All adult competing members must complete the annual training in order to remain eligible to compete in USEF-licensed competitions as owners, athletes, or trainers.
