FAQ: Measurements

1. What horses/ponies need a measurement card?

If the horse/pony is entered in a class where horse/pony height is a factor, the horse/pony must have a measurement card to present to the secretary at the competition.

2. What are the height requirements?

Hunter/Jumper/Welsh: Small up to 12.2, Medium up to 13.2, Large up to 14.2

Dressage/Combined Driving: Up to 148 cm barefoot, 149 cm with shoes

Arabian: Up to 14.2

Hackney: Up to 14.2

Saddlebred: Up to 14.3

Roadster Ponies to Bike: 52 inches and under

Roadster Ponies to Bike: 50 to 52 inches

Roadster Ponies Under Saddle or to Wagon: 54 inches and under

3. Does the owner have to be a USEF Member to receive a measurement card?

Yes, the owner must be an active competing member with USEF.

4. When will I receive the measurement card?

A card will be emailed to the owner within 45 days. A verification will be emailed to the owner by the Measuring Official to use until the card is received. Owners will be notified if there is a problem with the measurement.

5. My horse/pony has been measured by the previous owner. Do I need to re-measure it?

No, you do not need to measure your horse/pony again unless the previous card was a temporary card and has expired. The measurement card stays with the horse/pony and will be emailed to the new owner upon transfer.

6. Where do I measure my horse/pony?

Measurements must take place at a USEF Licensed competition where the horse/pony is entered to compete, and a USEF approved measurement stick must be used. The measurement will be performed by a Licensed Steward or Technical Delegate and another official. Please contact the show office for scheduling.

7. Who should present my Horse/Pony?

For Hunter/Jumper/Welsh, the trainer must present the animal. For all other Breeds/Disciplines, a person over 18 years of age must present the animal.

8. How do I prepare for the measurement?

The animal should be calm, exercised and accustomed to the application of a measuring stick. The feet should be prepared and shoes pulled if necessary and still jog sound when required.

Please reference the below guides to prepare for your horse/pony's measurement:

Hunter/Jumper & Welsh

Dressage & Combined Driving

Breeds (Arabian, Hackney, Saddlebred, Shetland)

9. What happens if my horse/pony measures out of a height section and I do not believe the measurement is correct?

Breed, Dressage and Combined Driving Measurements: Please refer to Subchapter 5-E Measurement Appeal.

Hunter/Jumper/Welsh Measurements: Please refer to HJ135, 136, 138 for re-measurement, protest and appeal procedures.

10. Where in the USEF Rule Book are the measuring rules?
