Ward and Kraut Claim Big Wins at the Royal Horse Show in Canada

McLain Ward claimed his third win in four days by taking top honors in the $50,000 Weston Canadian Open on Friday night, November 11, at the Royal Horse Show, held as part of the 83rd Royal Agricultural Winter Fair running November 4-13, 2005, in Toronto, ON.

Twenty horses came into the ring to attempt the track set by course designer Leopoldo Palacios, but none were able to catch the time set by Ward. Only the fifth rider on course, Ward of Brewster, NY, blistered around with Goldika 559, the mare he rode to victory in Tuesday’s $15,000 International Welcome and Wednesday’s $60,000 CN World Cup Grand Prix. Despite having 15 horses behind him, Ward’s time of 54.23 seconds held up all the way to the end.

The USEF is now accepting bids to host the 2006 Adequan/USEF National Open Reining Championship. In existence for more than five years, this prestigious event continues to feature some of the country’s best reining athletes. In 2002, the Open Reining Championship was used as the Final Selection Trial for the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain. The resulting team made history by capturing the Team Gold medal and the Individual Gold and Silver medals. The championship will again be considered the United States’ final selection trial for the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. In 2004, the championship became an international event as the final qualifier for the FEI World Reining Masters Series, a tradition that continued in 2005, when the National Open Reining Championship took place at the Kentucky Horse Park.
