Bjorn Ikast Returns to the Colorado Horse Park to Defend His Titles

International equestrian athlete Bjorn Ikast will return to the Colorado Horse Park this July to defend the two show jumping grand prix titles he claimed in 2004. Ikast will also attempt to become the only rider to win the Colorado Horse Park Triple Crown as he takes on some of the best riders in the country and from around the world.

It is the quality of competition that attracts top riders like Ikast. “We go where we get the best service and the best value for our horse show dollar,” explained Ikast of his decision to compete in Parker. “[At the Colorado Horse Park] the facilities are excellent; the people are warm, and they always brings great course designers to the shows."

Ikast, a native of Denmark, but currently residing in Mexico City with his wife Clara, is bringing four grand prix horses to Parker, including last year’s winners IZ’s Lifetime and Monte Cristo. He will have to successfully negotiate a course of obstacles that are up to five feet high and six feet wide and out-maneuver his fellow competitors to keep his titles.

Ikast and the other riders will test their skills in three grand prix. The season kicks off with the $25,000 High Prairie Grand Prix on July 9, followed by the $40,000 Rocky Mountain Grand Prix Presented by Murdochs on July 16, with the grand finale, the $60,000 Grand Prix of Denver Presented by Dillards and Ariat, on July 23. If Ikast, or any rider, is able to win all three grand prix on the same horse, he or she will earn a $100,000 bonus.

Spectators are welcome for all grand prix. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. on July 9 and 16 and at 4:15 p.m. on July 23. Food and equestrian-themed shopping are available on the grounds. Tickets are $10; children under 12 are $5; parking is free. For more information, visit www.coloradohorsepark.org or call (303) 841-5550. ~~~
