2005 United States Eventing Association Year-End Awards Celebrated at the Annual Meeting and Convention

More than 350 members of the United States Eventing Association (USEA) made their way to Charlotte, NC, for the USEA Annual Meeting and Convention, sponsored by Nutrena, held December 1-4, 2005. Over the weekend the association proudly honored the recipients of its 2005 Year-End awards at the annual luncheon, sponsored by Maui Jim Sunglasses.

The USEA Horse of the Year honors went to The Foreman, the nine-year-old Thoroughbred gelding owned by Ann Jones of Coatesville, PA, and ridden by Phillip Dutton. Of his eight starts in 2005, The Foreman placed first in two of them, and second in four events, most notably the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by Farnam in April, and the Burghley Three-Day Event CCI****. In addition to the title Horse of the Year, his owner received a $1,000 purse.

“Original” Junior Teal Dowling Honored as 2005 USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year

When asked to choose one word that best describes who she is, Teal Dowling pauses, laughs a little and gives a word that all who know her would heartily agree with. The word would have to be “original,” she told the panel of judges in her interview as a finalist for 2005 USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year. The delightful 18-year-old from Spring Prairie, WI, does her best to live up to that word, charting her own course as she navigates life and the world of equestrian sport, as the newest recipient of the USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year award.

From the December/January 2006 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: The American Breeding Scene

Over the past century, American sport horse breeding has grown and changed. In the early 20th Century, many equestrians who were active in showing also bred their own horses. The average horseman had a good working idea of bloodlines and what they desired in the attitude and conformation of a specific breed.

In this new century, often a rider will buy a horse and perhaps not be as concerned about pedigree. An active show rider wants an equine that will be pleasant and talented to ride, drive or show in hand, and sometimes thinks of little beyond those attributes. It is now common for many equestrians to fly to Europe to look for and purchase horses. However, the American breeder still supplies most of the horses bought and sold in this country.
