Kim Severson and Winsome Adante Top Final Mandatory Outing
Kim Severson of Keene, VA, and Winsome Adante are ranked #2 in the world, and at the one-day competition at the Horse Park of New Jersey in the Final Mandatory Outing on July 13 they looked very deserving of that ranking. As they did at the Rolex Kentucky Event in April, the only four-star event in the United States, Severson and “Dan” grabbed the early lead in dressage and never gave it up. Their final score was 40.2 with a clean cross country round.

Olympic Show Jumping Contender Royal Kaliber Will Not Compete in Aachen
The 12-year-old Dutch stallion Royal Kaliber, one of the equine stars of the American Olympic show jumping team, will not compete in Aachen, Germany, this week due to a minor injury. Owner and rider Chris Kappler is waiting to see how the horse will do and is hopeful for a full recovery.
On July 4, at the Hachenburg CSI in Germany, Royal Kaliber slipped while making a turn during the jump-off. Upon inspection by U.S. team veterinarian Dr. Tim Ober on July 12, a strain of the left hind leg was detected. A more definitive diagnosis is yet to be made. Royal Kaliber is currently being treated and is resting at a barn near Aachen. He is being hand-walked several times a day
At this point Royal Kaliber and Chris Kappler remain a part of the U.S. Olympic show jumping team.

The fourth spot is open for contention among Peters, Morse and Wilcox. The American Olympic dressage team will compete at CDIO Aachen this weekend, and the team will be announced on July 19.

Illinois Places Restrictions on Horses from VS-Affected States
The Illinois Department of Agriculture issued a statement, effective July 6, 2004, stating that all horses, donkeys, mules, ponies, cattle, bison, pigs, sheep, goats, deer, antelope and elk entering Illinois from Colorado should meet certain provisions from the Illinois Diseased Animals Act. The act states that all veterinarians issuing Certificates of Veterinary Inspection for livestock transported into Illinois from any state with a confirmed diagnosis of vesicular stomatitis (VS) within the past 30 days must include the following statement on the certificate: “Vesicular stomatitis has not been diagnosed on the premises of origin within the past 30 days. I have examined the premises of origin and have found no signs of vesicular stomatitis.”
Horse owners from Colorado, New Mexico and Texas must follow the above provision before transporting their horses into Illinois.
