From the May 2006 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: Where It All Begins
By Lori Teresa Yearwood

Sometimes people refer to the kinds of shows where Darren Chiacchia got his start as “backyard shows.” The haughtiness in their voices is unmistakable. “Well let me tell you,” Chiacchia says, “You come to realize that those ‘backyard shows,’ are everybody’s beginnings.”

A Bronze medalist for the eventing team in the 2004 Athens Olympics, Chiacchia says that even amidst the fanciest horse shows in Europe, he is thankful for the foundation of his early days. “Even in premiere horse shows, our stalls get flooded, or your tent gets blown down, and there you are, digging ditches, connected to the core of what it’s all about—the horse and its care.”

And the grassroots beginnings of the lower level shows across the country are where it all begins. Of the approximately nine million horses in the United Sates, more than 2.7 million are show horses. That means almost one third of the horses in this country wind up in a show ring at some point in their lives. Every horse and every rider has to start somewhere. That means local horse shows, 4H shows, Pony Club shows, recognized shows and schooling shows.
