American Endurance Ride Conference Names Hall of Fame, Pard'Ners Winners

Amid the hoopla of its annual convention last month in Reno, NV, the American Endurance Ride Conference’s (AERC) Dave Rabe was inducted into the nonprofit organization’s Hall of Fame, along with Tulip, the ultra-long distance half-Arabian gelding owned by Dr. Les Carr.

Also winning one of endurance’s top prizes, the Pard’ners Award, was Robert Ribley and his endurance horse, Tari.

Hall of Fame Person: Dave Rabe
Dave Rabe, a retired postmaster from Carson City, NV, is currently third on the list of high-mileage riders in the organization’s 38-year history, with 46,512 miles through 2009. Those numbers include 862 ride finishes—200 of them in the top 10, with 55 completions of 100-mile, one-day rides.

“I guess I like to ride more than most of you,” said Rabe to the hundreds of endurance riders assembled at the national awards banquet, held at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

Rabe is as well-known for his typical riding outfit—a tank top and cut-off jean shorts—as he is for the miles and miles of trails which he marks before most rides. “Dave is the only person I know that will get to a ride early to mark trail for the ride managers, ride the ride, then go around helping people and filling water troughs in camp, then go out and mark more trail for the next day of the ride,” said Stephanie Palmer-DuRoss of Queen Creek, AZ, one of the many people who nominated Rabe for the Hall of Fame award.

Sport Horse Feeding and Veterinary Management Seminar

The care and nutrition of competition horses will be the focus of this year’s Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Nutrition Conference, held this year on April 26-27 in Lexington, KY.

The theme of this year’s conference, "Feeding and Veterinary Management of the Sport Horse," is particularly relevant as Kentucky prepares for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, to be held in Lexington this fall.

In this age of scientific breakthroughs, management of elite equine athletes now includes equal measures of art and science. Although excellence and artistry in horsemanship will always be a necessary component in the success of top-flight horses, trusting relationships with equine healthcare professionals are pivotal for whole-body well-being. Specifically, modern management protocols for sport horses often hinge on two critical sciences: nutrition and veterinary care.

2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival Week 10 Wrap-Up

The 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) featured four disciplines in its tenth week of competition on March 17-21. The week featured the $75,000 Equine Couture/TuffRider Grand Prix CSI** and the WEF Dressage Classic, CDI***, along with a full schedule of hunter, jumper, and equitation classes. The week 10 title sponsor was Equine Couture/TuffRider.

Beezie Madden and her new partner, Coral Reef Via Volo, owned by Coral Reef Ranch, captured their first win together in the $75,000 Equine Couture/TuffRider Grand Prix, CSI**. They were the only double-clear round to win over Ashlee Bond and Cadett 7, owned by Little Valley Farm, and Sassicaia II, ridden by Katie Monahan Prudent of France for Plain Bay Farm.

Alan Wade of Ireland was the course designer for the class, which took place on the grass field at The Stadium of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. There were 41 entries in the class, and only four found the way to a clear round.
The women represented well, as all four entries were female. The first to go in the jump-off was Bond on Cadett 7. They were very quick to start, but just barely knocked a block off of the wall jump for four faults. They finished in 44.47 seconds for second place.

Gulf Coast Winter Classics Announce 2010 Circuit Awards

The crescendo for the 2010 Gulf Coast Winter Classics’ six weeks of competition occurred Sunday with the final $15,000 National Hunter Jumper League (NHJL) Nordic Lights Junior-Amateur Jumper Classic and the announcement of this season’s Circuit Champions.

Zionsville, IN-based Allen Rheinheimer gave the jumpers their swan songs as course designer for the last week of competition in the Gulf, creating layouts that challenged the will of both rider and horse. Sunday morning’s finale junior-amateur $15,000 Jumper Classic, sponsored by Nordic Lights Farm, had only three advancing to the jump-off. The final spotlight fell upon Akron, OH’s Natalie Geller riding the Redfield Farm entry Caletto V to a flawless victory in 50.025. The reserve spot went to Eirin Bruheim with mount Eternity 18, owned by Bruheim-Sims Show Jumpers with a clean time of 50.530, and third went to owner-rider Mary Antonini aboard Saladin finishing with four faults in 45.201.

Similar to the Oscar presentations held earlier this month, the excitement and nerves reached a fever pitch as riders, owners, and trainers anxiously waited to learn if their talents and hard work would be rewarded with a Circuit Champion title. Janet McCarroll, co–chair of the Gulf Coast Winter Classics, stated, “The competition has been superb this year, even the judges commented on what wonderful talent we had here.”
