Shahinian-Simpson Tops USEF Selection Trials for U.S. Show Jumping Team with Immaculate Jumping; Kraut Wins the $150,000 CN U.S. Open

Twenty-two horses remained in the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and they contested their fifth and final trial as part of the $150,000 CN U.S. Open at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. A total of 55 horses tackled Guilherme Jorge’s course in the second feature event of CSIO Wellington week, and the competition proved fierce. A difficult related line, a real question of scope and rideablity over the last three fences, caught out many riders, and of the entire field only six jumped clear. But the jump-off proved to be an international event with riders from three countries (USA, Canada and Mexico) returning for the second round.

Important Changes to the USEF Therapeutic Drug Rule Regarding NSAIDs Become Effective April 1, 2010

At this year’s USEF Annual Meeting held January 13-17, 2010, an important rule change was approved affecting the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in competition horses. Over the years, ongoing veterinary research has revealed that not only is there little or no benefit to administering more than one NSAID to a horse for most medical concerns, it can actually cause potentially harmful, even severe side effects.

Motivated by its commitment to the welfare of the horse, the USEF Board of Directors voted to amend its Therapeutic Drug Rule and restrict use to a single NSAID beginning December 1, 2011. Both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) support the rule change, and USEF joins other organizations including the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and Equine Canada in making this important rule change.

Mara Dean is First Off the Mark in 2010 HSBC FEI World Cup™ Eventing

Mara Dean has become the first rider to post a winning score on the HSBC FEI World Cup™ Eventing leaderboard, following an emotional pillar-to-post victory in the Florida sunshine at the Red Hills International CIC***-W in Tallahassee, FL.

Riding her veteran 15-year-old Irish-bred Nicky Henley, who was coming back into competition after sustaining a tendon injury at the 2007 Pan American Games, Virginia-based Dean held off the always serious challenge of Phillip Dutton riding Truluck, who was fourth at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in Great Britain last year.

She now stands an excellent chance of capturing part of the US$180,000 prize pot, which will be shared by the 15 most successful riders across the 12 events in the 2010 FEI World Cup™ Eventing accumulator series.

Dean, who has waited patiently for her horse’s return to form, also might consider the forthcoming first leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™, the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event next month, but said, “Nicky Henley doesn’t owe me anything. It would be nice, but I’ll do whatever is best for him. It’s just so nice to have him back.”

Gulf Coast Winter Classics Week IV: Honoring the Hunters

While Hollywood may be buzzing about Oscar nominees’ skills on the big screen, the fourth week of the 2010 Gulf Coast Winter was dedicated to honoring the talent and elegance of show hunters with two big events held at the Harrison County Equestrian grounds.

Friday morning began with the $10,000 Chronicle of the Horse/United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) International Hunter Derby presented by Dietrich Insurance. It all started with the equivalent of a red carpet walk spotlighting Shadbelly jackets, shined boots, braided manes and tails all around as a talented mix of 45 professionals and amateurs jogged before this year’s panel of four judges—Sue Ashe, Betsy Perry, Alice Coke, and Carl Hansen. Following the soundness test, stars and starlets began with a first-round course of 12 obstacles from the imagination of designer Paul Jewel, comprised mostly of natural materials such as logs, brush, and gate planks. Within the track, riders encountered six options with height choices of 3’6 or 4’ as well as bending and broken lines throughout. Only the top 12 scores would be invited back for the handy round two.
