Ravel Returns to Winning at the Exquis World Dressage Masters
The inaugural Exquis World Dressage Masters debuted at the palm Beach International Equestrian Club on January 30. The brisk weather made for some frisky horses but the USA’s star from the 2008 Olympic Games shone brighter than ever.
Steffen Peters, who traveled from San Diego, CA, for the occasion with Aikiko Yamazaki’s Ravel put on a performance that was very much the best of the Grand Prix – and the highest score of Peters’ career.
Against some of the world’s best riders, including reigning Olympic Gold medalist Anky van Grunsven, Peters showed the world an improved version of his horse, who, in his fourth place effort at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong, was already seriously impressive. Undefeated until the Olympic Games, Peters started a new winning streak in 2009, and took home 10,000 euros for his first-round effort.
“All I can say is that the horse makes it look good,” said Peters. “He was so honest today, he was very forward and very, very supple. Sometimes you go in there and some tests are more work, but today it was honestly pure fun. He offered every movement and it was honestly one of the best rides I’ve ever had.”

Peter Wylde and Esplanade 7 Post First Grand Prix Win of 2009 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival
Peter Wylde, 2004 Olympic Team Gold medalist for the USA, rode Esplanade 7 to his first grand prix win of the 2009 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival on Thursday, January 29. The pair took the fourth leg of the $30,000 Braman Motorcars WEF Challenge Cup Series under lights at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.
Fifty-seven combinations started the class with 15 going clear to move to the jump-off.
Six pairs posted clear rounds in a thrilling dash around the shortened course.
Wylde, who lives in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and Esplanade 7, owned by the Louisburg Farm, cleared the course in 41.63 seconds, only 0.6 seconds faster than second-place winner Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil and Let's Fly, owned by Double H Farms. Wellington's Lauren Hough was 1.05 seconds off the winning time with her ride aboard Quick Study, owned by Laura Mateo, to take third place.

American Horse Council Issues Forum to Highlight Welfare of Horse
The American Horse Council (AHC) has announced that the focus of this year’s National Issues Forum will be the “Welfare of the Horse.” The Forum will be held June 16, 2009, in Washington, DC, as part of the AHC’s annual meeting.
Over the last year, concerns about the welfare of horses used in racing, showing, recreation, or work have been raised by our fans, the general public, the media, and Congress. Such concerns have been expressed before, but perhaps not as broadly as now. “Those involved in the horse industry day-to-day know that the horse community has long recognized its responsibilities for the safety, welfare, and stewardship of its horses,” noted AHC President Jay Hickey. “Unfortunately, those who are not so involved are often not as aware of our many welfare and safety requirements and efforts.”
