Olympic Equestrian News: Team Medal Mix-Up Causes an International Stir – In the End, It's a Double Gold for Germany and Individual Bronze for American Kim Severson; Americans Left Off the Team Podium It was certainly a day of surprises at the 2004 Athens final day of eventing competition as a series of confusions left the final standings and the Olympic Team medal up in the air for more than an hour. The concern centered around German rider Bettina Hoy and whether or not she should have been assigned penalty points for, what she is saying, was unknowingly causing a technical refusal when she crossed the start line once, and then crossed it a second time, believing that the second cross was the official start of her qualifying round of the show jumping phase. This left the Ground Jury and the Appeals Committee involved in sorting out exactly what had happened and making a call to, at first, add time penalties to her score. The FEI officials then retracted the penalties saying that the rider’s time clock had been restarted, “resulting in a clear injustice to the rider concerned. The committee, therefore, removed the time penalties,” according to Freddy Serpieri, vice president of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and president of the Appeals Committee, in a jam-packed post-medal awards ceremony press conference. Bronze medalist Kim Severson and Winsome Adante making their final run of the show jumping course at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. They finished their work on a score of 45.20.
Darren Chiacchia and Windfall 2 ended their Olympic bid witha 12th place finish and a score of 60.60.
Amy Tryon and her off-the-track Thoroughbred Poggio II ended their Athens bid on a score of 51.80 and a seventh place finish.
Georgia's Julie Richards and Jacob Two Two landed at 23rd place after their work in the show jumping qualifier. Their final score of their Olympic Games was 67.00.
Olympic Equestrian Videos To Be Available: Exclusive Contract with NBC HorseTV Media Group, LLC, has announced that an exclusive agreement has been reached between its affiliated company, Equestrian Vision, and NBC for the U.S. video distribution rights to the equestrian events of the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Equestrian Vision has distributed the equestrian videos exclusively in North America for the past three Olympiads, including 1992 in Barcelona, 1996 in Atlanta, and 2000 in Sydney. The company will be distributing the videos to retailers and catalogers, and HorseTV will sell via mail order directly to the consumer. Four 100 minute long videos are planned for release in mid-October; one each covering Three Day Eventing and Show Jumping, and two Dressage titles covering both the team and the individual competition. The titles will be available on both VHS and DVD. Each video and DVD will be priced at $34.95, except for the Dressage double-DVD, which will be $59.95. Equestrian Vision is one of the world's top producers and licensors of video and television programming about horses, and is one of HorseTV Media Group's affiliated companies. Important Reminder for Dressage Exhibitors and Officials The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) has updated several Dressage Tests for the following levels, effective as of August 15th: • FEI Pony Preliminary Test Please note the 2003 Young Rider Freestyle Test has also been slightly updated, effective immediately, to now allow for the option of using a “zig zag” at the trot and the canter. All test orders for the Young Rider Freestyle will now receive the revised score sheet, and this movement may now be incorporated into choreography of Young Rider freestyles. Score sheets for these updated FEI tests are available for purchase from USEF by submitting the 2004 FEI Dressage Test Order Form, which is available on the Federation website www.usef.org, in addition to movements for all FEI tests. Nominations for the USEF Lifetime Achievement Award Close August 31 Nominations are now being accepted for the USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. The recipient of this award will be presented the Jimmy A. Williams trophy at the 2005 Annual Meeting in Louisville, KY. This award recognizes a horseman or woman whose “lifetime experience and accomplishments exemplify uncommon devotion to the sport of competition with horses and whose equestrian career and horsemanship have continually elevated the sport’s excellence.” Your nomination should include: the nominee’s name; the city and state of residence; discipline(s) and/or breed(s); your reason for suggesting him/her; and any other information pertinent to any involvement in the horse industry. Please be aware that this honor is not awarded posthumously and the nominee should still be living and no longer actively competing in equestrian sport. Submit you nomination by August 31, 2004 to: Kristyn Kay Stephanie Danhakl wins the 2004 Show Circuit Magazine/USEF National Callaway, owned and ridden by Stephanie Danhakl, 17, of Pacific Palisades, CA, was named champion at the forth annual Show Circuit Magazine/USEF National Junior Hunter Championships-West Coast. The championships were held August 16-17 in San Juan Capistrano, CA. The three-phase competition was judged by Russell Frey of Argyle, TX, Randy Mullins of Collierville, TN and Don Stewart of Ocala, FL. Dankakl was awarded the Show Circuit Magazine Perpetual Trophy, the Show Circuit Magazine Trophy, a crystal piece given to the winner to take home for one year, a Triple Crown Custom cooler, a 10-inch Revere bowl keeper trophy and a bridle. Form and Function Symposium for Breeders The Performance Horse Registry and USEF will host a “Form and Function” symposium for breeders with Dr. Marvin Beeman. Dr. Beeman has been an equine practitioner since 1957 and is a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). He was also named Colorado Veterinarian of the Year in 1975 and serves as the Joint Master and Huntsman of the Arapahoe Hunt Club.
