From the July/August 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: USEF Funds Equine Research

Imagine a world in which colic is as rare as equine rabies, tendon injuries heal swiftly and completely and osteoarthritis has been vanquished. In the 1980s, Sally Bush Wheeler, a prominent USEF hunter/jumper owner and philanthropist, envisioned this kind of healthier future for performance horses. One that offered cures and effective treatments for all kinds of career-ending, and sometimes life-threatening conditions that can afflict our equine competitors.

As co-chair of the silent auction charity during the 1985 American Horse Shows Association (AHSA) annual meeting in Williamsburg, VA, with AHSA President Richard McDevitt, she advocated using the $70,000 proceeds to fund research into these disorders. Turning that vision into an ongoing program to benefit the horse, the board passed a resolution in January 1985 to establish the Equine Health Research Fund (EHRF) with additional support from the Bernice Barber Foundation, the Clark Foundation and many private donors. In its resolution the board stated, “the benefactor of the EHRF is the horse, who neither talks nor writes. The horse simply serves us unselfishly and continually.”

Twenty years later USEF has donated approximately $500,000to benefit cutting-edge research in dozens of fields.
