| PhelpsPhotos.com | Dover and Kennedy Leading in Olympic Dressage Selection Trials
All eyes are on Robert Dover and FBW Kennedy as they fight to stay in the lead this coming weekend in the 2004 Olympic Dressage Selection Trials in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Dover took the early lead on June 12 when he won the Grand Prix with a score of 76.292%, and the pair refused to give up the lead to second-placed Guenter Seidel and Aragon on June 13 during the Grand Prix Special, when Dover and Kennedy finished with a score of 78.640%.
After the Special, Seidel remained in second and third place, however his horse Nikolaus 7 outshone Aragon as the two horses swapped place in the competition. Seidel and Nikolaus scored 75.320% and Aragon, a former jumper from Bavaria , scored a 72.640%. After the Special, Seidel said about Nikolaus, “I thought yesterday he was good already, and today I just tried to improve some little other things. Things I didn't like so much yesterday, and it worked pretty well. It was a really nice, flowing test. It was just comfortable and easy to ride.”
While Dover's ride on Kennedy was called “one of the nicest Grand Prix rides in the United States” by veteran Olympic judge Axel Steiner, his ride on Ranier was a bit bumpier as Ranier kicked out during transitions, earning a score of 68.320% and placing him in eighth place.
In fourth, Steffen Peters on Floriano, a 14-year-old Westphalian gelding, is right behind Aragon with 72.340%. Peters said that Floriano just keeps improving, and has even topped his stablemate, Grandeur, in the Trials. “I'm very, very excited about Floriano. He's such an extremely willing horse to work, and sometimes too much. The horse has elasticity and three fantastic gaits. Obviously, coming into this competition I would have put my money on Grandeur, that he would have been the higher placed horse. The whole season, at every single show, Floriano got a little bit better, but it's a bit unexpected that he should move that far ahead of Grandeur, so we have to make some very realistic decisions if he qualifies for the top five and goes to Europe .”
Tina Konyot and the mare Anna Karenina are currently in fifth with 71.8%. Leslie Morse follows closely behind in sixth with Kingston on a score of 71.080%, but anything can change as the competition continues this weekend at Oaks Blenheim in San Juan Capistrano with a Grand Prix on Saturday, June 19 th , and the Freestyle on Sunday, June 20th.
Madden, McDonald and Severson Among Top Three in World Rankings
Beezie Madden of Casanovia , NY , has moved up to third position in the FEI/Gandini World Riders Ranking behind 2003 World Cup Winner Marcus Ehning, and Ludger Beerbaum, both of Germany . Swiss rider Markus Fuchs is fourth. This is the first time in recent years that an American rider has been in the top five.
Madden riding Authentic was the highest placed rider at last month's Olympic Show Jumping Selection Trials in California earning her the #1 position on the Short List for the Olympic Team.
Peter Wylde, who has been living and competing in Europe , has moved up to the 9 th position in the FEI/Gandini Rankings. Wylde finished second in the Olympic Selection Trials on Fein Cera and was named the #2 rider on the short list for that stellar effort.
“It's great to see two of our short-listed Olympic riders in the top ten rankings and it's a good indication of our chances in Athens ” said Sally Ike, Director of Show Jumping for the USEF. “Beezie and Peter are two of the world's best riders now confirmed by their ranking on the list.”
Debbie McDonald of Hailey , ID , who was recently named as a discretionary selection to the Short List for the Olympic Dressage Team, is currently in second position in the FEI/BCM World Dressage Rankings behind Germany 's Ulla Salzgeber and in front of Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands . American Lisa Wilcox, who is based in Germany and will be vying for a spot on the Olympic Team, is ranked 6 th . The Olympic Dressage Selection Trials are being held over the next two weekends at Oaks Blenheim in San Juan Capistrano , California . Because McDonald and her mount Brentina have already been named to the short list as a discretionary selection she does not have to compete in the trials.
Kim Severson of Keene , VA , is currently ranked second on the FEI Eventing World Ranking list behind William Fox-Pitt of the United Kingdom . Three more United States riders are in the top ten on that ranking with David O'Connor of The Plains, Virginia at #5, Bruce Davidson, Sr. of Unionville , Pennsylvania at #7 and Abigail Lufkin of Middleburg , Virginia at #8. Severson, O'Connor, and Lufkin have been named to the Short List for the 2004 Olympic Eventing Team.

Samsung Super League 2004 Results: The Color Looks Very Much Like Orange
Dutch pride is at an all-time high after two consecutive victories in the Samsung Super League 2004, and the team at the top of the leader board can expect huge support when they line out on their home ground in Rotterdam next Friday.
A full three points ahead of Germany in second position, The Netherlands could take a real grip on pole position if they can capitalize with another good result, and the organizers at Rotterdam are encouraging the home fans with an offer of 25% off the entrance fee if they attend the show dressed in orange!
On top of that, there is a website competition in which readers can predict the finishing position of the Dutch squad next Friday and the winners will be put into a draw for a super new Samsung telephone. It has already attracted huge interest.
Based on last year's performance the home side should finish in No. 1 spot. Rotterdam provided The Netherlands with its only victory of the 2003 Samsung Super League series in a day that was full of surprises and, on the crest of the wave right now, a repeat looks very much on the cards.
