Jennifer Thompson grew up near Madison, Wisc., and started taking riding lessons at a young age. She started at the grassroots level, participating in 4-H and the United States Pony Clubs, before competitng as a young rider in eventing. She became a veterinarian, graduating from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999 and completing a year-long internship in equine medicine, surgery, and reproduction at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital. Thompson joined a local practice until she opened her own practice, Fox Woods Equine Veterinary Care, LLC, in 2012.

Thompson was made a name for herself in combined driving, clinching top results with Funnominial CG. The duo earned the USEF Intermediate Single Horse Combined Driving National Championship title at the 2018 Live Oak International. The following year, Thompson and Funnominial CG were 2019 USEF Advanced Single Horse Combined Driving National Champions at the Katydid CDE. They were named to the 2020 FEI Driving World Championship for Singles, though it was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19.

In 2022, Thompson and Funnominial CG won the Kentucky Classic CDE CAI3*-H1 and the Bromont CAI3*-H1.
