American Shetland Pony Represents the United States Equestrian Federation at National FFA Convention
He may have been small, but that didn’t keep an American Shetland Pony named Cornerstone’s Valiant Man from making a big impact when he attended the 82nd National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention in Indianapolis. The Shetland Pony, owned by Sherri Jolliff, represented the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and was a big hit with the horse enthusiasts attending the convention.
“We were proud to have the opportunity to support the FFA and share our small equines with them at their national convention through our partnership with the USEF,” said Johnny Robb, Director of Marketing for the ASPC. “Our small equines are ideal for FFA projects.”
Amber Montgomery of KM Stables in Alexandria, IN, brought Cornerstone’s Valiant Man to the convention, where the Shetland drew lots of attention in the USEF booth and introduced FFA horse lovers to the small but mighty breed. “The American Shetland Pony is a recognized breed through the USEF, and we were pleased to have them represented at our booth,” said Lori Nelson of the USEF.

2010 USEF Membership Directory Under Way
The United States Equestrian Federation has partnered with Harris Connect, a Virginia-based publisher of directories, to produce the 2010 USEF Membership Directory. The directory will enable USEF members to keep in touch with old friends, trainers and competitors.
To ensure that the most up-to-date directory is printed, Harris Connect is mailing postcards to the members of the Federation asking them to respond to a toll-free number with their information. Those members not responding will receive a follow-up phone call from the publisher. The deadline for submission of updated phone, address and e-mail information is February 15, 2010. Those not replying to the postcard or phone call will simply have their name and city/state printed in the directory.
Orders may be placed at any time, and the directory is scheduled to ship near the end of May 2010.
Any questions or concerns regarding the directory may be directed to (800) 338-7794.

United States Hunter Jumper Association Announces 2009 Lifetime Achievement Honorees
The opening week of the Fall Classics was a cornucopia of excitement, beginning with the Welcome Jumper Classic and a star-studded field of 34 competitors taking on course designer Allen Rheinheimer’s sprawling 12-obstacle, 15-effort first-round layout. Given the tight time limit of 76 seconds to navigate twisty turns, a triple and a double combination, it’s not too surprising that a mere 11 made it to the jump-off round. Among them Olympic veteran Norman Dello Joio with two mounts, the Wembley Farms, Inc., entry Notre Star in a clear first-round time of 72.671 and wife Jeanie’s KLM Jimmy finishing quick and clear in 72.393.

Follow the Kentucky Horse Park’s Efforts to Help Rescue Horses on ClubEquestrian.com
ClubEquestrian.com introduces a new blog titled “Kentucky Horse Park: Making Strides to Help Horses.”
Meet Cutter, a big Thoroughbred gelding with tons of personality, who is recovering from injuries so he can find a new home; Truffles, a sweet bay Thoroughbred filly who has just begun training; June Bug, an Appaloosa mare that started life on a Canadian PMU farm; And finally, two Thoroughbred broodmares—Cream Top and Original Heirline—waiting to have their foals in the spring. These horses may have varied backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common thanks to the KyEHC and the Kentucky Horse Park—a second chance.
These are a few of the rescue horses that are getting the attention and care they need thanks to the Kentucky Horse Park, through its new partnership with the Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC).
You can follow their stories by reading the blog at ClubEquestrian.com. Meet the horses and follow them as they go through the new student education program at the Kentucky Horse Park and receive additional training and handling. At the completion of their rehabilitation and training, some will even be available for adoption.

Kerry Tracey and Chasing The Music Finish in Perfect Tune at Rocking Horse
During the weekend of November 5-8, 25-year-old Kerry Tracey of Watkinsville, GA, led the victory gallop at the final SmartPak Equine/United States Eventing Association (USEA) Training Three-Day Event aboard her homebred Thoroughbred/Appaloosa gelding Chasing The Music. Although the entries were low for this long-format division, which was held in conjunction with the Rocking Horse Fall Horse Trials (Altoona, FL), the competition was fierce, and Tracey moved up from fourth after dressage to gallop into second after the endurance day. A tidy show-jumping round left them with a finish on their dressage score and a trailerful of prizes and ribbons.

Improving the Outcome after Tendon and Ligament Injuries
Tendon and ligament injury causes both economic and personal hardship for horse owners and industry professionals. A prolonged period of lay-up and rehabilitation is necessary, but whether the horse will be sound at the end of the rehabilitation period is uncertain. Lameness due to tendon and ligament injury is common in performance horses, affecting up to 25% of racehorses over a career and accounting for up to 43% of injuries in event horses, but it is also common to companion horses. Chronic lameness often follows the initial injury, with recurrence as high as 80% of racehorses with tendinitis.
