Joie Gatlin And SunCal’s King Win $25,000 Open Jumper at the Metropolitan National Horse Show

Joie Gatlin of San Juan Capistrano, CA, riding SunCal’s King, owned by Canyon Capital Insurance, won the $25,000 Open Jumper class at the evening session of the Metropolitan National Horse Show Wednesday night in New York City. Gatlin topped a roster of 12 horses and earned $7,500. The Table II.2b class required riders to clear the Linda Allen-designed course of 11 jumps in order to move on immediately to the eight-obstacle jump-off. Six riders went clean in the first round, but only Gatlin was able to produce a double clear performance for the win. Georgina Bloomberg of New York City placed second aboard Nadia, owned by Gotham Enterprizes. Ken Berkley of Flemington, NJ, placed third aboard Ratina Z, owned by Carolyn Kelly.

Retired Olympic Horse Euthanized Following Complications

The retired Olympic horse Flim Flam passed away in Florida last week, following a brief, but irreparable illness. The 17-year-old Hanoverian gelding, owned by Fritz Kundrun and ridden by Sue Blinks, was humanely euthanized on the operating table after discovery of a ruptured stomach on Thursday, October 28, 2004. Flim Flam was only ill for a few hours and seemingly experienced very little pain.

Strong Field Battles for World Cup Qualifier Rankings at Washington International $100,000 President's Cup Grand Prix

United States Equestrian Federation rider and 2004 Olympic Team Silver medalist McLain Ward adds 20 World Cup qualifying points to his standing in the East Coast League, after a first place finish atop Goldika 559 at the $100,000 Washington International President’s Cup in Washington DC on October 30. One of three horse and rider pairs to finish with double clean rounds, Ward and Goldika 559 (Bay Holsteiner mare; Cor de la Bryere—Zelena II; Double H Farm) kept fans on the edge of their seats during a fast and furious jump-off, finishing in a mere 35.73 seconds.

Park Avenue Team Wins Dressage Night’s Continental Cup

Prior to the $25,000 Open Jumper class at the Metropolitan National Hosre Show, the evening session opened with the second annual Dressage Night, featuring the Continental Cup--a team musical freestyle competition. Riders at Grand Prix, Intermediaire I and First Level made up each of three teams. The riders on the Park Avenue Team won the Gold medal with a total score of 239. The team consisted of Cynthia Payne of Jupiter, FL, aboard Laredo, with a score of 81% in the Grand Prix; Gabriel Armando of Argentina who resides in Flemington, NJ, riding Euclid, with a score of 80% in the Intermediaire I; and Isabelle Leibler, 9, of Greenwich, CT, riding her German pony Get the Picture, with a score of 78%.

Hunter Action Highlights Opening Day at Metropolitan National Horse Show in New York City

First Year Green Working Hunters kicked off the Wednesday hunter action at the Metropolitan National Horse Show with Louise Serio and Ken Berkley taking top honors. Serio, of Kennett Square, PA, rode Fashion Farm’s True to the win in the opening class of 21 competitors.

A: No. Only one of the owners needs to be a Life, Senior or Junior member or pay a $20 non-member fee and a $5 Breed/Discipline fee (Senior members) at each competition. (See Art. 201)

FEI Veterinary Committee News on Salicylates

The 2004 FEI General Assembly agreed to change the threshold for salicylates in line with the proposals submitted by the Veterinary Committee. The previous thresholds for salicylates were 750 ug/ml in urine and 6.5 ug/ml in plasma. Experiences in testing have indicated that abuse of salicylates was possible by administration of low doses without exceeding the threshold.

FEI Veterinary Committee News on Drug Testing Issues

Recently our (the FEI) Medication Control Programme has reported several cases of tests in which low concentrations of sedatives were found in competition horses. In this respect, the following substances have been detected: Acepromazine, Detomidine, Reserpine, Fluphenazine and Guanabenz.

The United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (USEF), as the National Equestrian Federation of the U.S., is the regulatory body for the Olympic and World Championship sports of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, reining, show jumping, and vaulting, as well as 20 other breeds and disciplines of equestrian competition. As the country's largest multi-breed organization, the Federation has over 80,000 members and recognizes more than 2,800 competitions nationwide each year. It governs all aspects of competition, including educating and licensing all judges, stewards and technical delegates who officiate at these shows.
