Join the Excitement at the 38th U.S. National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show
Currently underway, the 38th annual U.S. National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (U.S. Nationals) is the flagship event for the Arabian horse industry, featuring top-quality horses, a commercial trade fair and the annual Arabian horse judging contest. This year’s show features 3,000 entries vying for champion, reserve champion or top ten in 104 classes that include reining, mounted native costume, working cow, show hack, breeding-in-hand, driving, English, hunter, Western pleasure, and more. The event draws approximately 75,000 spectators and 2,000 horses from across the United States and Canada and awards almost $1 million in cash and prizes. The action continues through October 16 at the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center.

2004 Olympic Show Jumping Team Horse Royal Kaliber Euthanized in The Netherlands
Royal Kaliber, one of the United States' most brilliant horses ever to compete internationally in show jumping, was humanely euthanized on October 8 in the Netherlands. He underwent colic surgery for intestinal adhesions, on September 27th and had been recovering well until his progress considerably slowed. Royal Kaliber took Chris Kappler to a Team Silver medal and an Individual Bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Rocky Dare Wins First Qualifier for 2004 USEF Open Reining Championship
Rocky Dare of Salem, NJ, won the USEF Open Reining Championship Qualifier at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress on Saturday, October 9. The competition in Columbus, OH, marked the first of four qualifying classes for the 2004/2005 season.

After two days of rigorous testing, topped off with a final-four ride-off, 16-year-old Brianne Goutal surpassed even her own expectations with a well-earned, but nonetheless, surprise victory.

Last Week to Enter the 2004 USEF Media Awards
The USEF is now accepting nominations for the 2004 Annual Media Awards. The deadline for nominations to be received in the Lexington, KY, office is Monday, October 18, 2004.
A panel of media experts will judge the awards, and the 2004 USEF Awards for Media Excellence will be presented formally during the 2005 USEF Annual Meeting held January 12-16, 2005, at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, KY.
Nominations are now being accepted in the following categories:

- Equestrian Print Media – Single Article
- Non-Equestrian Print Media
- Internet Media
- Broadcast Media
- Photography
One of the six winners will be selected to receive the Daniel P. Lenehan Memorial Trophy for Overall Excellence.

As I sift through weekly e-mails and phone messages, I’m beginning to realize the United States Equestrian Federation’s best kept secret is no longer a best kept secret. Miniature Horse Registry National Championship Show and Shetland Pony Congress Show Largest in History
The American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR) and the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) announced today that their two major horse shows drew record participation. The 2004 AMHR National Horse Show held in September in Tulsa, OK, boasted 5,269 entries, making the show the largest miniature horse show in history and one of the largest all-breed shows of the year. The AMHR National Horse Show is the equivalent of the Super Bowl for Miniature Horses and attracts top Miniature Horses from throughout the U.S.

Week in Review Competition Results for October 2004
The United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (USEF), as the National Equestrian Federation of the U.S., is the regulatory body for the Olympic and World Championship sports of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, reining, show jumping, and vaulting, as well as 20 other breeds and disciplines of equestrian competition. As the country's largest multi-breed organization, the Federation has over 80,000 members and recognizes more than 2,800 competitions nationwide each year. It governs all aspects of competition, including educating and licensing all judges, stewards and technical delegates who officiate at these shows.
