Weber Sets a Record with Seventh Straight USEF National Four-in-Hand Driving Championship
It wasn’t easy, but Chester Weber never wavered and netted his seventh straight USEF National Four-in-Hand Driving Championship at the Kentucky Cup and Lexington Driving Classic. Weber’s win also bodes well for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, as this event served as the test event for next year’s WEG, also to be held at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Weber beat long-time teammate Tucker Johnson (and another driver going for a record seven wins) by 10 points, but the rivalry challenged Weber all weekend.
“Tucker made me work really hard for this,” said the winner after adding 2.30 penalties in the cones.
Australian driver Boyd Excell proved he will be a force to be reckoned with in 2010 as he split the American pair in the overall standings with the team American Keady Cadwell hopes to drive next year.
Historically Weber finds the cones the most challenging of the three phases and felt the pressure Sunday, but he never flinched, even though he had a very fresh horse on his team for the finale.

Matthew Metell: Perfection at the 2009 Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals – East
It was a picture-perfect ending to a picture-perfect weekend for the 2009 Platinum Performance/USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals – East in Gladstone, NJ. Matthew Metell, riding Pioneer (owned by Heritage Farm) captured the prestigious win at the Finals – East.
This year the Finals – East had a record number of entries with 97 riders completing all three phases. The weekend began with a warm-up class on Friday, followed by a reception hosted by the USET Foundation held in the famous USET Headquarters Rotunda (the main barn turned 98 years old this year). The competition got under way on Saturday morning with the Phase I – Flat.
After the flat phase, only one point separated the top five riders, with Maggie McAlary in the lead with a score of 95. The second phase, gymnastics, proved to be a test of the riders’ ability to negotiate two sets of cavalettis, a bounce to a tricky trot fence and finishing up the course on a counter lead to a large oxer. Metell and Jessica Springsteen were tied after the gymnastics phase each with a score of 234.
The third phase, jumping, was filled with excitement as riders negotiated the course, which included a large open water jump and a triple combination set strategically by the judges, which asked the riders to demonstrate lengthening and shortening of stride. The top four riders who earned their spot into the Final Four Ride-Off were Metell, Springsteen, McAlary and Elizabeth Lubrano.

The Hunt was on in the American Hunter Jumper Foundation's World Championship Hunter Rider Pro Finals
Hunt Tosh went into the first round of the 15th Annual Professional World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) Finals for the 2009 American Hunter Jumper Foundation (AHJF) Professional WCHR title as if it belonged to him. He negotiated the highest mark in the first round and never looked back. Four rounds later he won the highest honor for a professional rider for his very first attempt in this prestigious class, which took place on October 2 at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD.
The 2009 WCHR Professional Finals was sponsored by Stillwell-Hansen, Inc., presented by John R. Ingram Fund and the Ingram Family, produced by the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation (AHJF) and hosted at the Capital Challenge Horse Show.
The riders were escorted into the arena in a carriage. It was a very impressive opening to the evening and set the stage for the night, which began with a buffet dinner in the concourse and was followed by presentations of special awards and then the class of the six finalists: Hunt Tosh, Peter Pletcher, Ken Berkley, Scott Stewart, Kelley Farmer and John French.
During the class the crowd was electric as they cheered, applauded and whistled after each round. By the ingate as riders handed off horses they offered tips to the next riders and cheered on their opponents. As co-manager Billy Glass maneuvered past the ingate near the end of the class he spied Berkley passing along pointers to Tosh and rooting him on as he negotiated his final round. “That was special,” Glass later commented. “Even though Ken at that point knew he had no shot at victory, he was there for his competitors.”
