Sara Schmitt, Tracey Morgan and Boots Wright Win USEF National Combined Driving Pony Championships at Laurels at Landhope
In a brilliant display of skill and finesse, Sara Schmitt, of Glen Gardner, NJ, drove her Morgan stallion, High Country Doc, to one of only a few clean and clear rounds in the cones phase at The Laurels at Landhope and her first national championship. The last in the order of go on Sunday, September 11, Schmitt had some wiggle room. Ahead by only four points under the new rules where a ball down is now a three-point penalty instead of five. This gave her a small margin of error, one that could easily have evaporated.

U.S. Team Hopeful for 2005 Samsung Super League Win; Final Leg to Commence on Sunday at CSIO Barcelona

The Stage is Set for a Super Showdown in Barcelona for the Finale of the Samsung Super League
The 2005 Samsung Super League series draws to a climax this weekend in Barcelona, Spain, and with the teams at both the top and bottom of the table bunched so closely together, it promises to be a truly exciting finale to a great season of team jumping.
With double points up for grabs, the leaderboard could look significantly different by the late afternoon of Sunday, September 18, but the past performances would suggest that the closing stages of the eight-leg series will come down to a fierce battle between the United States, Germany and Great Britain.
Following their convincing victory in Aachen two weeks ago, the Americans are in pole position once again but have only a four-point lead over Germany, so they will need to stay on their toes. With so many of the top riders and horses competing at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary, Canada, this past weekend, some of the teams for Barcelona have been affected, but the U.S. still looks strong with McLain Ward, who was impressive in Aachen, joined by Lauren Hough, Laura Kraut, Aaron Vale and Jeffery Welles.

Beezie Madden and Judgement Go Clear in Three Rounds to Win the $1,000,000 CN International Grand Prix
The sun shone down on the International Ring for the $1,000,000 CN International Grand Prix on Sunday, September 11, however, the brightest star of the day was Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY. She and the 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion Judgement went clear through three rounds of competition to capture a prize of $325,000.
It was a class that hosted 49 horse and rider combinations over three very challenging courses set by Leopoldo Palacios. The first round included a very difficult triple combination that tripped up many horses and ranged from 1.40 meters to 1.60 meters. Despite worries about the footing and the controversy that came from the cancellation of the Nations’ Cup on September 10, 12 riders managed to clear the first round.

From the September 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: The Friesian
Once regarded as little more than a model for a silhouette, the Friesian horse has translated its floating high-action gaits into high marks in the performance world. While Friesian enthusiasts have long recognized the dynamic versatility and athletic prowess that lies beneath those gleaming black coats and long flowing manes, the recent acceptance of the Friesian as a performance breed by the USEF has brought it to the attention of competitors in multiple disciplines. Further, the formation of the International Friesian Show Horse Association (IFSHA) as the umbrella organization for the breed’s recognition with the USEF has given the breed a unified performance home. Together, IFSHA and USEF have created the foundations from which the Friesian has walked, trotted and cantered into acceptance as a performance horse.

From the September 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: The Hackney
Hackneys have never been the “flavor of the month.” Hackney forebears were used as light cavalry mounts as early as the reign of Henry VIII, and ancestors of this highly evolved breed have been specifically identified as Hackneys for more than 200 years (see John Lawrence's A Philosophical and Practical Treatise on Horses, published in 1796). Unlike some horse breeds, however, their numbers have never been legion. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) currently rates the Hackney as “threatened” based on their numerical guidelines (see www.albc-usa.org). However, the ALBC (established in 1977) is the new element, rather than a limited Hackney population. Hackney numbers have always been low.

From the September 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: The Morgan
The first horse to establish a significant presence in America—which would later become an official breed—originated in the time of George Washington’s presidency of the newly formed United States. As was a custom of the time, a stallion often was referred to through his ownership. In this case…the owner was Justin Morgan and hence…“the Justin Morgan horse” or, more simply, “the Morgan horse.” This one stallion established the Morgan breed as he serviced the variety of mares while he worked and traveled the hills and valleys of the New England landscape.

From the September 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: The National Show Horse
The National Show Horse breed, with its registry now over 20 years old, continues to astound established fans and newcomers alike with the amazingly consistent quality that the Saddlebred/Arabian combination produces. Indeed, it is the very success of the combination that has made the NSH more than just another crossbreed, and that uniqueness is what will carry the breed far into the future.
