Dutton and TruLuck Best of the U.S. Contingent at the 2009 Rover Burghley Horse Trials

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is renowned as the toughest cross-country track in the world.

2009 didn’t disappoint.

Capt. Mark Phillips course required both bravery and accuracy, there were problems around the track and the most troublesome fence: Land Rover Discovery Valley (fence 6) caught out more than 20 horses and riders.

American pair Phillip Dutton and TruLuck weren’t among them. The most dependable cross-country rider in the world didn’t tarnish his reputation and guided the relatively inexperienced 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding to fourth place. Plagued by injury throughout his career, TruLuck always delivers when he gets to the competition, his most recent accomplishment before Burghley was winning Team Gold and Individual Silver medalist at the 2007 Pan American Games.

High Roller Reining Classic Offers Great Reining Action

Producing the "crown jewel" of Western riding competition is no easy task, but with 10 years of horse show management experience and by participating at the show as an exhibitor, it is a job Amanda Brumley can do with confidence. Brumley is the founder and owner of Brumley Management Group, LLC, a promoter of reining competitions in the Western region of the United States. She is currently managing and showing at the High Roller Reining Classic, a National Reining Horse Association "AA" rated event, featuring over $200,000 in added money and prizes. The show began on September 4 at the spacious and luxurious South Point Hotel, Casino, and Equestrian Center and runs through September 12.

Brumley has been involved with horses her entire life, competing in every aspect of the equestrian industry. She began showing reining horses in the late 1980's because she was drawn to the technical difficulty that it entailed. Her interest in managing shows began when she felt that the shows were becoming too long and taking too much of a toll on the exhibitors and their horses.

United States Equestrian Team Foundation President Emeritus Finn M.W. Caspersen, 1942-2009

Former United States Equestrian Team (USET) Chairman Finn M.W. Caspersen, whose competitive nature paid off in a shining multitude of medals for America, died September 7 in Rhode Island. He was 67.

"His leadership over his 20 years with the team was extraordinary. It brought the team to an entirely new level, and we can't be anything but forever grateful to Finn," said Jane Forbes Clark, the USET Foundation's president and CEO.

During Caspersen's tenure, which began in 1982 when he was elected to the USET board, the team won 71 medals, including 25 Golds in the Olympics, World Championships and Pan American Games.

His personal involvement with combined driving led the U.S. to prominence in the discipline, previously dominated by Europeans. Caspersen's determination to put America on the map in that sport paid off with a Gold medal in the 1991 World Pairs Driving Championship, which opened the door to his hugely successful staging of the 1993 World Pairs Championship at Hamilton Farm in Gladstone, NJ, home of the USET.
