Carlswald Prince's Dominoe Wins Five-Gaited Gelding Stake at the Saddlebred World's Championship Horse Show

Carlswald Prince's Dominoe, trained and ridden by Lionel Ferreira, defeated 11 others in Wednesday night's Five-Gaited Gelding Stake, a class in which defending Five-Gaited World's Grand Champion CH Boucheron did not place, at the Saddlebred World's Championship Horse Show. Carlswald Prince's Dominoe won the Lexington Junior League Horse Show Five-Gaited Grand Championship in July.

CH Boucheron had not shown since winning the Five-Gaited Championship at the Indianapolis Charity Horse Show in early June. He settled down and made a clean first pass, but had difficulties with the trot on the second pass.

U.S. Dressage Squad Finishes Third At World Equestrian Festival

The United States dressage team finished in third place behind a history-making Dutch team that beat Germany on Thursday to win the nations’ team competition at the World Equestrian Festival. The U.S. riders, Steffen Peters of San Diego, CA, on Floriano; and George Williams of Delaware, OH, on Rocher, had led the standings in the grand prix after the first of two days of competition. But, the powerful Dutch and German teams, which included Olympic Individual and Team Gold medal horse and rider combinations, proved too strong on the second day.

U.S. Show Jumpers Forge Ahead at World Equestrian Festival

The United States show jumping team claimed a victory and a fourth place finish Thursday on the eve of the Samsung Super League Nations Cup competition at the World Equestrian Festival. Jeffrey Welles, of Ridgefield, CT, piloted his nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Sampras, to victory in the Youngsters Cup, while Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI, finished fourth on the Dutch Warmblood gelding, Anthem, in the Preis von Nordrhein-Westfalen.

U.S. Driver Places at World Equestrian Festival

Tucker S. Johnson of the United States drove his team of four horses to third place in the dressage musical freestyle on Thursday at the World Equestrian Festival. Johnson, of Hobe Sound, FL, was enthusiastic about the consistent performance of his team of relatively young horses that also finished third in the regular dressage test Wednesday, the first of five days of four-in-hand driving at Aachen. He is the sole U.S. competitor in the driving competition.

McLain Ward Back in the Saddle as Aachen’s World Equestrian Festival Gets Underway

United States Olympic Silver medalist McLain Ward was back in the saddle for the first time since breaking his collar bone three weeks ago while competing for the United States at the Samsung Super League in Hickstead, England.

Ward, of Brewster, NY, rode in two classes on the opening day of Aachen’s World Equestrian Festival, the host for the seventh of eight Samsung Super League events on Friday. Aachen will be the site of the quadrennial World Equestrian Games next year.

Samsung Super League: Germans Looking Super-Strong at Aachen

Home to the world-famous cathedral in which King Charlemagne was buried in 814 A.D., Aachen is Germany's western-most city, located 65 kilometers from Cologne. It stands on the borders of both Belgium and The Netherlands and is also the location of one of Europe's most celebrated jumping arenas. On August 26, the stadium will be packed as the home team strives to maintain pole position in the 2005 Samsung Super League.

Dressage Competitors Please Note This Correction to an Article in the September 2005 issue of Dressage Today

Please note this important correction to an article included in the September issue of Primedia’s Dressage Today magazine in regards to the use of double bridles at Third Level.  Per Rule DR121 of the USEF Rule Book, double bridles continue to be optional for use at Third Level.  While discussions continue in relation to the future use of double bridles at the various national levels, no rule change has been passed at this time which would change the current rule for the remainder of the 2005 competition year or for the 2006 competition year.  USEF rules and rule changes are always available on the Federation website at http://www.usef.org/content/rules/.

CH Rejoice a World’s Champion Yet Again

When it comes to superlatives, it's hard to match the record of CH Rejoice, by The Merchant Prince out of Denmark's Radiant Society, owned by Dr. Donald and Betty Petit of La Canada, CA, just northeast of Los Angeles. The 16-year-old CH Rejoice won the World Championship title in the Three-Gaited Under 15.2 Stake Tuesday evening with John Field aboard. In her past, of course, she's been successful not only under saddle, but in harness with Betty Petit driving. Betty Petit has always loved Saddlebreds, and when her daughter graduated from riding hunters at the famous Flintridge Riding Club under the tutelage of legendary Jimmy A. Williams, she decided it was time to have some fun in the show ring herself. So, she and Dr. Donald Petit have had some kind of fun with CH Rejoice.

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) has redesigned its website, www.saddlebred.com, to be more user-friendly and interactive. On the new website, ASHA members have the opportunity to view expanded and detailed pedigrees, as well as the progeny of a specific horse. Members also have the opportunity to easily renew their membership, as well as have access to American Saddlebred Registry forms and applications.

2005 FEI World Driving Championship Pairs Update: Competition Horses AnnouncedFollowing the announcement of U.S. Team and Alternate/Individual drivers on June 2, the USEF has announced the horses which will accompany the U.S. Team to the 2005 FEI World Driving Championship Pairs in Wals-Siezenheim, Austria, September 8-11.

Cornell Researcher to Discuss Early Findings of Effective Prevention for Infectious Disease at Hampton Classic

The deadly outbreak of equine herpes virus at Churchill Downs this spring threatened to limit movement of horses between racetracks during the Triple Crown series of races. Frequent travel is also common for sport horses, and such an outbreak could hamper participation at major shows. A Cornell University virologist says his preliminary research indicates that vaccines containing weakened live viruses, called modified live vaccines (MLV), appear to be more effective in preventing horse herpes than other more widely used vaccines.

110th Annual Monmouth County Horse Show Wrap-Up

Gold Cup Defending Speed Champion Ramiro Quintana Aims at American Gold Cup Grand Prix

Ramiro Quintana won the testing Speed Challenge at the American Gold Cup last year, and he will return with the same mare, Carousel, to defend his title at this year’s event, September 15-18, at the Devon show grounds in Devon, PA. The Speed Challenge is a very exciting class, which pits professionals against juniors and amateurs, and Quintana, who also won this event four years ago, placed first and third in last year’s event.
