Top Young Horsemen Strut Their Stuff at 13th Arabian Youth Nationals
The Youth National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (Youth Nationals) is celebrating its 13th anniversary in Albuquerque, NM, at Expo New Mexico on July 23-30, 2005. The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) of Aurora, CO, produces the weeklong event that features top-level competition, a shopping expo, the annual youth convention and daily activities.

U.S. Riders Shine at FEI Jumping Competition for Children in Bogotá, Colombia
Three junior riders, Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, FL; Zazou Hoffman of Santa Monica, CA; and Renick Townsend of Wellington, FL, served as excellent ambassadors of equestrian sport as they represented the United States in the CSI-Ch B Bogotá, Colombia, July 13-17, an FEI-sanctioned jumping event for children.

U.S. Dressage Riders Awarded Grants for 2006 World Equestrian Games Training
Four United States dressage riders have been awarded USEF Dressage European Competition and Training Grants to travel to Europe as they prepare for the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. These grants have been made possible through funding from the United States Olympic Committee.

Samsung Super League: The Battle Resumes at Hickstead
As the 2005 Samsung Super League series resumes this Friday at Hickstead after a six-week break, the Swiss hold a narrow lead over the Americans at the top of the table and only two points separate the first five nations. There is likely to be some jostling amongst the leading bunch, but the most exciting action will probably be played out between the three countries at the other end of the leaderboard as the Dutch and Irish fight to climb away from that last-place relegation position and the Belgians work to ensure that they don't get left behind in the aftermath.

ParaEquestrian Classification Clinic Available Through USEF
The USEF will be sponsoring a ParaEquestrian Classification Clinic, September 9-10, at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center in Woodinville, WA. The clinic will be open to a maximum of ten physicians or physical therapists and is designed to help them recognize and classify eligible riders and drivers with physical disabilities in preparation for national competition. There will also be discussion about the modified classification system in development for USEF ParaEquestrian. The course will include lecture, discussion and demonstration, along with supervised practice of the classification process.

World-Class Reiners and Horses to Battle It Out for National Championship Title at Kentucky Horse Park
For the first time in Kentucky Horse Park history, reining will take a dizzying spin to center stage, as the park plays host to the inaugural Adequan®/ United States Equestrian Federation Open Reining Championship, the USEF National Youth Reining Championship,presented by Markel Insurance and Hagyard-Davidson-McGee, and the final qualifying competition in preparation for the 2005 International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Reining Masters Series Finals—all in the same week, August 23-28.

Arabian Horse Youth Association Welcomes USEF President at Convention
USEF President and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist David O’Connor was well received as the guest of honor at the annual Arabian Horse Youth Association Convention in Albuquerque, July 22 and 23. As keynote speaker, O’Connor both educated and inspired in his usual style, telling young equestrians, “If you are really good at what you do, the winning will follow.” The pursuit of a true equestrian, he said, is one of excellence—not just a pursuit of awards.

USDF Announces 2005 Young Rider Graduate Program Weekend Seminar
The United States Dressage Federation (USDF), in conjunction with the USEF, will host a weekend educational seminar for recent graduates of the USDF Advanced Young Rider Program. The seminar will take place October 14-16, at the USET Foundation headquarters in Gladstone, NJ. Seminar participants, ranging in age from 21 to 25, will be amateurs, professionals and future high-performance riders in the sport of dressage. The purpose of the program is to provide graduates of the USDF Advanced Young Rider Program with information and support for an easier transition into the adult equestrian world.

Hundreds of Competitors Expected for 2005 USEF Pony Finals at Kentucky Horse Park

The USEF is now accepting nominations for the 2005 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. The USEF Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose lifetime experience and accomplishments exemplify uncommon devotion to the sport of competition with horses and whose equestrian career and horsemanship have continually elevated the sport’s excellence. This year’s honoree will be presented the Jimmy A. Williams trophy during the 2006 USEF Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Fifteen-Year-Old Henry Pfeiffer Captures his First Grand Prix Win
Henry Pfeiffer, who competed in his first grand prix at Horse Shows By The Bay I, posted the only double clear to win the Grand Traverse Bay Grand Prix on Fox Meadow Farm’s seven-year-old gelding, Preston. Pfeiffer's goal was just to go clean in the jump-off, and when he pulled off the win, he said that he felt like he swallowed his heart.

Aaron Vale Celebrates Wins During the Biltmore Summer Classic Series
Rider Aaron Vale of Aiken, SC, rode Alison Register’s 13-year-old Warmblood bay mare Alliance to a double-clear round victory over a field of 26 competitors in the H n’ D Stables’ and Wilton Connor Family sponsored Lucky Sevens Welcome Stake on July 21. Alliance's first round time of 63.50 made him the third out of four mounts for Vale going into the jump-off. Their second clear round time of 34.70 was just one second enough to pull off the win.

Kentucky Department of Agriculture Expands Vesicular Stomatitis Embargo
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is protecting Kentucky's multi-billion-dollar stake in its equine and cattle industries from an outbreak of vesicular stomatitis (VS) that has spread through four southwestern states. The Department has expanded its VS embargo to 20 counties in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.

Todd Minikus and Gardenio, the sleek black 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by YZ Partners, LLC, led the victory gallop in the $75,000 RV Sales of Broward Grand Prix on July 24 at HITS-on-the-Hudson IV. Gardenio proved to be the best of a field of 17 horses in this CSI** grand prix event. Todd Minikus has partnered with Gardenio since the horse was a five-year-old.

Ox Ridge Summer Dressage Show to Offer Top Competition and Professional Dancers with Horses
The Equus Projects, a company that partners professional dancers with horses and their riders, will perform three original works for dancers, horses and equestrians at the 2005 Ox Ridge Summer Dressage show, one of the most elegant and prestigious dressage shows in the nation. This three-day international competition, held August 19-21, will draw riders from all over the world to earn qualifying scores for the Olympic Games, the World Equestrian Games and the World Cup Finals, as well as for national rankings.

USDF Announces Young Riders to Represent the United States at the 2005 North American Young Riders' Championships
The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce the advanced young riders selected to represent the United States in dressage at the 2005 North American Young Riders' Championships (NAYRC), which take place July 26-31 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA. The NAYRC is the premier competition for young riders, ages 16-21, in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of eventing, dressage and show jumping. Riders from each Canadian province, USEF zone (for show jumping), USDF region (for dressage), and United States Eventing Association area (for eventing), as well as from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands and Bermuda, are invited to compete via each country's national equestrian federation. The broad range of competitors attending the championships produces an Olympic-like atmosphere.

The Race for Maui Heats Up Among Northern California Hunter Trainers
Following the sold out, three-show Woodside Summer Circuit, John Bragg leads the point standings for the 2005 Woodside Hunter Incentive. At each of the seven USEF “A”- and “AA”-rated hunter/jumper shows at the Horse Park at Woodside, each trainer’s five highest scoring hunters are counted toward his or her Hunter Incentive points. All hunter sections count toward the points: junior, amateur, children’s, adult, ponies and open. This year’s contest ends at the Woodside Fall Finale (September 29-October 2), and points at this show will count double.

You can almost write the ringside dialogue as a horse enters the dressage arena. “Ohhhh. Look at that one. He’s (you can fill in the blank here) Dutch, German, French, Swedish. He looks really nice.” And he likely is very nice, for without question, the Warmblood invasion has peacefully conquered much of the dressage world.
But hold your horses! What’s that at “X”? It may not be a horse of a different color, but it certainly is a horse of a different breed. The Andalusian, Lusitano, Friesian, PRE, Morgan and Arabian are enjoying high degrees of success and ensuring that variety is indeed the spice of dressage life.

Ashton and Dobbin Clinch the Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials CIC** Division
The Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials and CIC** came down to a nail-biting finish as Corinne Ashton and Dobbin, the overnight leaders, entered the ring and began their quest for the top honor. Dobbin dragged down one fence giving them four penalty points, leaving only five points between her and Mara Dean, who had completed a clear round. The cheers were deafening as Ashton managed to negotiate the remaining fences fault free and within the time allowed to finish victorious with a final score of 41.2 to win the top prize of $7,500 and points in the Adequan United States Eventing Association (USEA) Gold Cup Series.
