Jack Le Goff 1931-2009

Jack Le Goff, the man who defined the eventing program in the United States passed away today, July 24, 2009, in France. The legendary horseman revolutionized the United States equestrian program and defined an era with medals and championships.

Le Goff’s coaching record at international championships was exemplary. His teams won medals at four consecutive Olympic Games and three consecutive World Championships. He brought some of the biggest names in the sport over the last three decades to fruition.

“He was about creating riders and horsemen,” said Derek DiGrazia, who represented the U.S. at the 1986 World Championships and is one of the most renowned trainers and course designers in the U.S. today. “That was a big thing with Jack. He wanted us all to know what was going on with the training and management on a daily basis. He wanted us to be aware, that was another huge part of being with Jack, being a horseman.”

Jack Le Goff never missed winning a medal with any of the eventing teams that he coached in his 14-year tenure in the United States. Eighteen medals in eight international championships is an astounding accomplishment by which the U.S. team still measures itself. His innovative, intensive training changed the U.S. eventing program forever.

Reining Welcome Competition Shows Canadian Strength

Reining joins dressage, show jumping, and eventing as the disciplines showcased at this year’s Adequan® FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, presented by Gotham North which hosts teams from Canada, Mexico, and the United States for a full week of competition.

In its second year as a full-medal sport, this year’s SmartPak™ North American Young Rider Reining Championship is shaping up to be a major Can-Am challenge. With a very strong Canadian showing for this year’s competition, the US Teams were surprised by the strength and depth of their neighbors to the north.

Sage Sapergia, riding Shiners Q Chex for Team Alberta took top honors in the pen with a score of 211, earning her way to the victory lap for the Welcome Competition – the first competition in this prestigious championship. The Welcome Competition is intended to be an opportunity to work out any team dynamics before the Team Competition, which begins Friday afternoon.

The U.S.–Southeast/South Central Team’s Maggie Jo Gratny was second, showing Roo Fifty Two to a 210.5 score.

Rounding out the top three, Vanessa Strotmann representing Team Canada Combined, scored a 208.5 for her run aboard Listos May Day Hobby.

Securing five of the top ten scores in the Welcome Competition, Canada proved that they came to play and hold fast to their hopes of taking home some hardware from the medal ceremonies. The three Canadian teams are definitely focused and ready.

Team USA Wins First Test Event For 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

Kentucky Cup Reining Initiates Kentucky Horse Park's New Indoor Arena

With a great sense of anticipation, Team USA's Aaron Ralston made history as he entered the ring as the first athlete ever to compete in the Kentucky Horse Park's new indoor arena in Kentucky Cup Reining, the first test event for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG).

"I really didn't realize it was happening until afterwards, and then it opened my eyes and it really started to sink in. To be involved in something so big and special as these test events for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and to be on the team with these athletes is so special. It's all bigger than just me. It's a great honor and it's very humbling," said Ralston, 32, of Silt, CO, winner of Team Gold and Individual Bronze medals at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games.

Kentucky Cup Reining, a CRI**** competition officially sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), featured teams from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The U.S. finished first with a team score of 659.50, followed by Canada with 641.00 and Mexico with 631.50.

USEF/AVA Crowns National Equestrian Vaulting Champions

Equestrian vaulting came to the Kentucky Horse Park for the first time last week, with the United States Equestrian Federation and the American Vaulting Association crowning their national vaulting champions from July 9-12.

“We’re excited to present the USEF/AVA National Vaulting Championships in the Kentucky Horse Park for the first time, and to be part of the fabric of the Horse Capital of the World,” said Sheri Benjamin, the American Vaulting Association’s president. “We were also delighted to see so many spectators at the event, and to show off our unique and growing sport in Kentucky for the first time.”

The Men’s Individual Gold Vaulting Championship title went to Kenny Geisler, 28, vaulting with equine partner Lanson 16, a nine-year-old Hanoverian lunged by Jessica Ballenger, and Sir James, a six-year-old Thoroughbred/Percheron lunged by Olivia Swan. Both horses are owned by Emma Garrod Seely. This is the second national championship win for Geisler, who won his first Men’s Gold Vaulting Championship in 2001. He is coached by Emma Garrod Seely, and is a member of the Mt. Eden Vaulting Club in Saratoga, CA.

Alicen Divita of Woodside, CA, took the Women’s Individual Gold Championship title for the second consecutive year, vaulting with Lorino, a 13-year-old Hanoverian owned and lunged by Julie Divita, and then with Giovanni, a 12-year-old Mecklenburger lunged by Krista Mack and owned by the Woodside Vaulters. Rebecca Blake and Emma Leestma Crowned Gold Medalists at the 2009 USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals Presented by Dressage Today®

The 2009 United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Dressage Seat Medal Finals presented by Dressage Today® was held July 17-19 in the beautiful setting of the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL. Riders came from across the country to compete for the championship in two age divisions—13 & under and 14-18.

The purpose of the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Program is to promote and reward excellence in equitation, including correct seat, position, and use of aids in the sport of dressage. Junior riders in these finals qualified last year by competing in the Dressage Seat Medal Semi-Final classes held at each of the 2008 USDF Regional Championships, with the top competitors in each age division being eligible for the finals.

This year’s judging panel of Lois Yukins, Paula Lacy, and Charlotte Trentelman were given the difficult task of testing the riders and their skills, with each age division rising to the occasion and making the judges’ jobs even harder.

In the 13 & Under division, Rebecca Blake of Enumclaw, WA, topped the class of 10 riders with a score of 90.000% to take the Gold medal riding borrowed mount Socrates, owned by Kelly Kavanav. Traveling all the way from Region 6 paid off, as Blake flew home with the Hart Trophy, a new Wintec 500 saddle and Kieffer snaffle bridle.

Drugs and Medications Corner: The Dangers of Overmedication and Under Diagnosis in the Sport Horse

In this day and age, there are many medications available to both human and horses. While some of these medications are quite benign, most of them have varying degrees of side effects. Some of the side effects are relatively minor, while some are rapidly fatal. Recent national events have shown us that we must take great care in what we put in our horses. Obviously, horses can neither tell you where it hurts nor can they tell you what they feel like on a given medication. So, paying attention to what our horses have been diagnosed and medicated with is critical.

Copper Beech, LLC, is pleased to announce that CBMF Phoenix (DBA Street Talk x Treble's Wild Memories) has been selected as the winning prize in this year's American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA)/Team Morgan Win a Morgan Horse Contest. One lucky contestant will be the proud new owner of this handsome Morgan gelding.

He's currently 14.3 to 15 hands and "is healthy as a horse," said his manager, Harry Sebring. "He is started and ready to be finished by his new owner in the direction that fits their interest."
