Endurance: The Name Says It All

By Karen Karvonen

In any equine sport, a competitor and his mount are like a centaur. A rider becomes almost one with his or her horse in the ring, arena or cross-country course.

In endurance competition, whether it’s a U.S. or international event, riders must not only merge with their mounts. They must sustain this bond throughout 100 miles for up to 24 hours, fording chest-high rivers, splashing through torrents of rain, pushing on through knee-deep snow or galloping across a windswept desert. Riders must trust their equine companions to pick a cautious line between steep drop-offs, slog miles through shoe-sucking mud, face into a blinding sandstorm and pick a safe course through a wood by moonlight.
