Steffen Sweeps! Peters and Ravel Dominate for the U.S. at CHIO Aachen
In an unprecedented sweep, Steffen Peters and Akiko Yamazaki’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood Ravel swept all three classes in the CDIO Aachen (GER): the grand prix, the grand prix special and the grand prix freestyle—further validating their Rolex/FEI World Cup™ Dressage Final victory in April.
The sweep was a first for an American combination, and they did it in classic style. Their score in the finale, Sunday’s grand prix freestyle, was 85.600%, more than a point clear of 2008 Olympic Gold medalists Anky van Grunsven (NED) and IPS Salinero. They picked up 30,000 euro for their efforts on Sunday, pushing their three-day prize money total to more than 45,000 euro. With this win, Peters (who was born in Germany) more than realized a lifelong dream of finishing in the top three at Aachen. He achieved it, to standing ovations, with family, friends and fans in attendance to celebrate his tremendous accomplishment.
The pair will return to their base in San Diego, CA, with the next major goal the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games next September in Lexington, KY.

Vermont Summer Festival Week I Wrap-Up
Jimmy Torano and Heechhiem’s Tampa won the $30,000 Vermont Summer Special Grand Prix, presented by Johnson Horse Transportation, Inc., on Sunday, July 5, at the Vermont Summer Festival horse show in East Dorset, VT.
The first two horses to attempt the track set by course designer Michel Vaillancourt posted clear rounds, but none that followed were able to duplicate their perfect score of zero. In the end, it was a face-off between Kate Levy of Wellington, FL, and Jimmy Torano of Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Levy, 28, was the first rider to challenge the shortened jump-off course. Riding Starlight, her 10-year-old grey Dutch Warmblood mare, Levy knocked down a rail at fence seven, a liverpool, before also knocking down the first element at fence 10. Their final jump-off score of eight faults in a time of 48.11 seconds left the door open for Torano.
Torano set off with his nine-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Tampa, successfully clearing all nine obstacles on the jump-off track in a time of 46.96 seconds to claim victory in the first of six grand prix events to be held at the Vermont Summer Festival.
