Todd Flettrich Claims Double Grand Prix Victories at Dressage at the Park in Allentown, NJ
Todd Flettich of Unionville, PA, was absolutely thrilled with his ride in the grand prix aboard Donner on opening day of Dressage at the Park, held at the Horse Park of New Jersey at Stone Tavern in Allentown, June 30-July 2. Donner won the FEI Grand Prix-Open/BLM/GAIG with a score of 66.250%, topping a field of six horses. Cathy Morelli of Bedminster, NJ, aboard Bese was second, scoring 63.958%. The class was a qualifier for the Colonel Bengt Lundquist Memorial (BLM) Championships and the Great American Insurance Group (GAIG)/USDF Regional Dressage Championships.

Olympic Gold Medalist Chris Kappler Opens Blainville International with a Win
Chris Kappler of the United States opened the CSI-W Blainville Jumping International with a win on Wednesday, July 5. The international show jumping competition runs from July 5-9 at the Blainville Equestrian Park in Blainville, Quebec.

Hampton Classic Horse Show to Host Finals for Long Island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities
The finals for the Long Island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities (LIHSSRD) will be held on Monday, August 28, of the Hampton Classic Horse Show. The LIHSSRD finals mark the first time in the horse show’s three-decade history that competition will be held on Monday. Admission will be free on this day when all of the shops in the Hampton Classic’s popular Boutique Garden and Stable Row will be open for business. The show series, created by HorseAbility, was founded to provide riders with disabilities the same competitive experience that other riders enjoy.

Breyer Creates Portrait Model of Barbaro With Proceeds to Benefit the New Bolton Center
His racing career is over, but for Barbaro, the 2006 Kentucky Derby champion, the real race has just begun. He won’t be going it alone, however, judging from the outpouring of support from around the world since his recovery began at The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s famed New Bolton Center. Now, Breyer Animal Creations, makers of the model horses, has stepped in to help by creating a Barbaro portrait model horse that will provide a donation to New Bolton from the sale of every Barbaro model.

Equine Viral Arteritis Outbreak Reported in New Mexico
On Monday, June 26, 2006, the Office International des Epizooties (OIE.) Reference Laboratory for Equine Viral Arteritis at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, confirmed an outbreak of equine arteritis virus (EVA) infection involving fetal losses among mares on a Quarter Horse breeding farm in New Mexico.

More Records Fall at the National Reining Horse Association as Membership and Reining Shows Increase Worldwide
Interest and participation in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has never been greater. The association continues to exhibit phenomenal growth, especially in the areas of membership and approved shows. During its June meeting, the NRHA’s Board of Directors announced a year-to-date increase of 4.5% in memberships for 2006. The board also announced a significant growth in NRHA-approved shows, especially in international venues where there’s been an increase of more than 33% in 2006 versus 2005.

Rich Fellers and McGuinness Gallop to Gunnar Cup Win at Spruce Meadows North American
Kicking off the Spruce Meadows ‘North American’ tournament, the Gunnar Cup opening international class, saw a starting field of 42 whittled down to 10 who contested a long and galloping jump-off course. Days of extreme heat and thunderstorms in Calgary had given way to slightly cooler temperatures and a leaden sky, and although the 60% chance of rain that had been forecast fortunately held off throughout the afternoon, yet humidity remained unpleasantly high, and the bugs were in a biting mood.

Saddlebred Advancement Committee Formed, Open Members Forum Scheduled
The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) has formed an Advancement Committee. Appointed by ASHA President Fred K. Sarver, who serves ex officio on all committees, the new committee will be chaired by longtime horsewoman and former director Sandra Lilly of Princeton, WV. Vice Chair is Director Victoria Gillenwater of Tennessee, and members who have agreed to serve are Kayce Bell (Alabama), John Conatser (Kentucky), Lisa Duncan (Kentucky), Peter Fenton (California and Kentucky), James Lawson (Ohio), Barbara Molland (California), Claire Panke (Indiana), Jimmy Robertson (Kentucky), Dr. William Shanklin (Ohio), Joan S. Todd (Indiana), Paul Treiber (Wisconsin), Dr. Nancy Trent (Kentucky) and April Vercoe (Ohio).

2007 National Youth Horse Leader’s Symposium Coming to Denver
The 30th Annual National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium, presented by the American Youth Horse Council (AYHC), will be held on March 9-11, 2007, in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, CO. The 2007 event will boast more than two-dozen internationally and nationally respected presenters assembled to share their keys to successful youth horse programming and horse management. Attendees will find resources, referrals and networking to improve their ability to help kids connect through horses. A weekend program for teen leaders is always a favorite, bringing youth participating in many different horse disciplines and breed activities together to learn leadership skills and effective horsemanship techniques.

Kentucky and Kentucky Amateur Futurity Weanling Saddlebred Eligibility Deadlines Pending
In order to show in the weanling division of the Kentucky and Kentucky Amateur Futurity, 2006 foals must be conditionally registered on or before the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show post-entry closing date of Monday, July 10; blood typing or DNA results must be received in the Registry office on or before Friday, August 18.

The United States Equestrian Federation®, Inc.
