Wiese and Lamborghini Take Lead Despite Rain in USEF National “Brentina Cup” Championship at 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions
Under the banner of a chilly relentless rain, the 2009 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions got underway on Thursday, June 18. The “Brentina Cup” riders (aged 20-28) were the first of five groups of horses and riders vying for national championships titles. The nine “Brentina Cup” riders were the only division to get a performance in as the rest of the day’s competition was suspended due to the deluge that ensued.
With the hallowed presence of the USET Foundation headquarters as the backdrop, nine up-and-coming riders went to task before the championship ground jury of Hilda Gurney, Uwe Mechlem, Charlotte Bredahl-Baker, Janet Foy and Lilo Fore.
Jocelyn Wiese and Lamborghini made the best of the treacherous conditions and put in a very confident effort to take the lead on a score of 66.410%.
“It would have been nice if it wasn’t raining,” said the 21-year-old rider. “But it didn’t affect my ride too much. My reins were a little slippery, and I was definitely wet, but I don’t think it affected my ride.”

Fireworks Over Virginia at the Firecracker Classic/Arabian Horse Association Region XV Championship Show
Once again, Region XV will host their Firecracker Classic/AHA Region XV
Championship Show at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA, on July 1-5,
2009. Their motto is “Dollars Galore and Much More!”
The competition management at this competition looked at the payout in prize money several years ago and determined only 30% of the exhibitors won prize money. They wanted to distribute monies over more exhibitors so decided they would have to come up with some creative ways to “spread the wealth.” With that in mind, they created a give-a-way drawing with $10,000 in merchandise and gift certificates. Opportunity to win occurs throughout al of the competition. There is also a Trainer’s Draw; each trainer receives a ticket for every horse that is entered under the trainer’s name. Two tickets are drawn every session with a payout of $25 in the morning, $50 in the afternoon and $100 in the evening. These amounts double on Saturday.

Drugs and Medications Corner: Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications and Equine Patients
This special section, Drugs and Medications Corner, will feature a series of articles from the USEF’s Drugs and Medications Program and the veterinary community to communicate the latest news to better educate the equine community.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are a class of agents best recognized for anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain suppression) properties. An important clinical use of this class of medication is to improve patient status and minimize pain. The NSAIDs are a class of medication that were originally used in veterinary medicine in 1875. Indications for use included the control of fever, inflammation with pneumonia, and lameness associated with arthritis.

Atlanta Summer Classics Opener is Action Packed
Mother Nature welcomed exhibitors to the summer season with plenty of sunshine and blue skies kicking off two weeks of heated competition at the Georgia International Horse Park. "This has been some week—great weather, wonderful courses, and all the amazing talents we have here!” said Bob Bell, President of the Classic Company.
Following a grand prix triumph last weekend in Tryon, NC, Hardin Towell continued his winning ways in Conyers. Based in Camden, SC, Towell overtook 24 tough competitors to clinch victory in Thursday’s Classic Equine Equipment, Inc.-sponsored Open Jumper Welcome Stake. After riding his own eight-year-old Belgian-bred mare, Boo Van Het Kastanjehor to a double-clear finish on the Allen Rheinheimer-designed course of looping turns, Towell spoke of his partner and the evening class, “I’m so lucky to have her. She’s the best horse I’ve ever had. This course was great, but I really don’t always try to go too fast here, because I believe she’s destined for really big jumps in the future.”
