USEF Mourns Loss of Mary Lutz, Friend, Colleague and Devoted USEF Staff Member
It is with the deepest sense of loss that the USEF must announce that Mary Lutz, Director for Endurance and Para-Equestrian, died on Friday, June 9, as a result of a riding injury. We ask that the entire equestrian community join us in expressing our deepest sympathy to Mary's family. Mary’s devotion to horse sport, her patient team attitude, and her commitment to both endurance and para-equestrian were admired and respected by all who had the privilege to work with her.
Surviving Mary are her parents, Mary B. and Michael Lutz. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of gifts to the USET Foundation programs for endurance and para-equestrian.
Mary was a respected friend, colleague and mentor to so many in the equestrian community, and she will be sorely missed by all. John Long, Chief Executive Officer of the USEF, remembers when he met Mary for the first time:
“My first one-on-one time with Mary was in Asheville at an endurance competition in 2004. I was captured by her dedication but, even more taken by how others approached her. She was gentle and imminently likable but, not compromising, and she graciously introduced me to Art Priesz. Mary's passion for para-equestrian, coupled with her quiet dedicated humanity, will always be my memory of her. I remember calling her to share my excitement when it was decided to include para in the FEI Games in 2010. At the start of the Games in September of 2010 we can all reflect on Mary and what she did. She will be missed, but never forgotten.”

Americans Rack up the Wins at the Spruce Meadows National
With an evening kick-off, the opening class of two scheduled for ‘National’ Friday at Spruce Meadows was the ATCO Midstream Challenge. Although cool breezy conditions greeted the 25 riders, who qualifiered from a class held two days earlier, the rain that had threatened all day fortunately held off despite an extremely overcast sky.
With eight riders destined to qualify for the jump-off, Britain’s Bob Ellis built a relatively straightforward course with few options for cutting corners. It therefore required committed riding to finish inside the 71-second tight time limit–-evidenced by the fact that no fewer than six combinations jump clear but incurred time penalties.
