Barbaro and Team Receive Well Wishes from Thousands from Around the World

Since Barbaro’s tragic accident in the Preakness, thousands of e-mails have poured in to the USEF. As we have compiled nearly 5,000 notes that well wishers have sent, our hearts have been touched. The kindness and love that everyone is sending to Barbaro and his human family have been amazing. Countless e-mails from around the world in many languages have shared the common sentiment: “Barbaro, we love you, and get well soon.” From Ireland to Africa, Peru to Australia, Barbaro has an ever-growing fan base of all ages. People share their commiserating stories, send their condolences to the owners and offer great praise to Michael Matz and his team. Hundreds, if not thousands, of pony clubbers have written to cheer the colt on. He has even received well wishes from many soldiers stationed in Iraq. From poems to songs and Bible verses to brief but heartfelt words of encouragement, Barbaro, the Matzes, the Jacksons, Edgar Prado and the team at New Bolton have been on the world’s mind. USEF is in the process of putting together a binder for Barbaro and his team with all of your e-mails that we will send to the clinic next week. If you have any last minute wishes, please send them in the next few days to matzbarbaro@usef.org.

Devon Horse Show Wrap-Up

The first day of the 2006 Devon Horse Show featured juniors competing in three different equitation classes: the USEF Show Jumping Talent Search, the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) Equitation Classic Jumper Phase and the USEF/Pessoa Hunt Seat Medal.

Sixteen-year-old Addison Phillips of New York City, NY, won both of her classes, taking the top call in Section C of the USEF Talent Search and Section A of the USEF/Pessoa Medal. Since she has already won the WIHS Equitation Classic Finals, Phillips did not show in the WIHS class. She competed on her relatively new show mount, Icon, with help from her trainers at Heritage Farm. This was Icon’s first time showing at Devon since Phillips sold her old equitation horse.

From the May 2006 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: You Could Be a Winner!
By Sarah L. Evers

You already know your horse is special. And you believe he should be a national champion. Through the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), he has the chance to earn that honor, along with many others. In the prestigious Farnam®/Platform™ USEF Horse of the Year program, your horse could be named a Grand National, National, Zone, Regional or District Champion—all through competing in shows you were already competing in. It’s an honor that will last a lifetime, a title to add to your horse’s resume and awards you can proudly display in your home.

But you may be wondering: What exactly is the Horse of the Year (HOTY) program? How do I get involved? What can I win? What do I do once in the program? Perhaps you are thinking it might all be too complicated. But, competing in the Horse of the Year program is easier than you might think.
