Debbie McDonald Commands Respect; Joins Morse, Seidel and Dover in Trip to Las Vegas for World Cup

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. That’s exactly what Debbie McDonald earned from officials, competitors and spectators alike as she rode Brentina to victory in the 2005 U.S. Grand Prix Freestyle Championship and U.S. League Final in Burbank, CA, this weekend. Strutting through a freestyle program to the sound of Aretha Franklin, Olympic Team Bronze medalist McDonald and Brentina earned the winning score of 77.975% and a standing ovation for defending her 2004 title.

USEF Announces U.S. Team for 2005 Samsung Super League

The USEF has announced the team for the 2005 Samsung Super League competitions for “Tour #1,” La Baule, France (May 5-8); Rome, Italy (May 26-29); and CSIO St. Gallen, Switzerland (June 2-5). The team members listed in order of their ranking on the March 25, 2005 USEF International Computer List, with first ranked horse also listed, can be found

Beezie Madden and Authentic Capture "Super Bowl of Show Jumping" at $200,000 Budweiser American Invitational

Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, one of America’s most successful equestrians, added the title of Budweiser American Invitational champion to her long list of riding accomplishments Saturday night, April 2, in Tampa, FL. The nation’s richest show jumping event, the Budweiser American Invitational, offering $200,000 in prize money, also presented one of the most challenging courses in the 33-year history of the event.

United States Equestrian Team Foundation’s Amanda Warrington Grant Awarded to Sara Mittleider

When Sara Mittleider was 13 years old she fell in love at first sight with a 15-hand bay gelding with his tail stuck straight out that hadn't beaten a single horse in six races at an Idaho track and that her father was looking to buy for quick re-sale. He tried to sell the $300 horse named El Primero, whom Sara had nicknamed Tony, but Gary Mittleider found no takers.

USDF Announces All-Breeds Award Rule Change

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) All-Breeds Award Program, one of the USDF’s most popular award programs, which recognizes the accomplishments of specific breeds in dressage, announces changes to its program rules. The All-Breeds Award program now requires owners to declare for the participating breed registry that they wish their horse to be recognized for USDF All-Breeds Award purposes. This program requirement has been put in place to administer the one horse/one breed/one award rule that was approved at the 2003 USDF Annual Convention.

Show Jumping Hall of Fame Honors Snowbound

The Show Jumping Hall of Fame conducted its annual induction ceremonies during the intermission at the Budweiser American Invitational on Saturday, April 2, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. The legendary horse Snowbound was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. He joins 54 previous inductees whose contributions to the sport set them apart and earned them the honor of enshrinement in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame.

Heidemann Wins FEI World Cup Qualifier at Galway Downs

Jessica Heidemann, 24, of Bellingham, WA, captured the FEI World Cup Qualifier (CIC***-W) at Galway Downs, CA, on April 3 on her 14-year-old Thoroughbred-cross gelding, French Twist, with a score of 58.4. Heidemann took over the lead after the overnight leader, Lauren Whitlock, 20, of Rohnert Park, CA, and her 12-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Kipling, lowered the oxer at fence seven to drop to second place on 60.1 penalties. Sara Mittleider, 19, Kuna, ID, with the 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, El Primero, moved up from fourth place overnight to finish third on 76.7 penalties despite having two rails down.

West Coast Active Riders Begin Prix de Nations Team Trials and Have Important Riders’ Meeting

The West Coast Active Rider (WCAR) organization has begun the four-week selection trials for their Prix de Nations teams that will compete at Spruce Meadows on July 6. There are four different sections for junior and amateur jumper riders to compete in, and four riders for each section will be chosen based on their performances throughout the trials.

PFHA Board of Directors to Meet

The Paso Fino Horse Association (PFHA) Board of Directors will meet Saturday, April 23, starting at 9 a.m. in Atlanta, GA, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Airport at 1235 Virginia Avenue. Over $4 Million Available in Annual Sweepstakes Prize Money Available to Arabian Owners

Thrilling Competition to Spice up the Devon Show

Members of the show jumping team that won the Silver medal at last summer’s Olympic Games in Athens will compete in the jumper divisions and in two thrilling grand prix classes at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair, which runs May 26-June 4. In a thrilling duel for this year’s top honors, Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ, Open Jumper Champion for four of the last six years, will take on Olympians Chris Kappler of Hunterdon in Pittstown, NJ, Open Jumping Leading Rider at Devon two years ago; and McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, Leading Open Jumper Rider at Devon for five of the past six years.

Highlights From Week Nine of the 2005 Winter Equestrian Festival

The early morning feature on Tuesday, March 29, was the 1.45 m Jumpers with 21 starters. Grand Prix star McLain Ward’s brightest and best this season has been his speed horse Galant. The duo proved how dominant they can be on Tuesday, producing a jump-off clear and an amazingly fast time of 31.142 seconds. Ward’s time was 5.4 seconds faster that second place finisher, Kate Levy, and 15.2 seconds faster than Alison Firestone in third.
