The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Ad Hoc Committee on Selection has approved naming the horse/rider combinations of Lauren Hough/Quick Study and Laura Kraut/Cedric to the Show Jumping Long List for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games to be held in Lexington, KY, September 25-October 10, 2010.

As per the USEF Selection Procedure for the Show Jumping Team, the Selectors have the discretion to recommend up to six of the 15 horse/rider combinations to the Long List regardless of their participation or placing in the Selection Trials. The remaining nine combinations will be chosen according to their ranking at the conclusion of the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team which run February 25–March 7 in Wellington, FL.

Hough and Quick Study (owned by Laura and Meredith Mateo) and Kraut and Cedric (owned by Happy Hill Farm) both jumped two immaculate clear rounds in the first two legs of the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team currently under way at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL. Spooner and Cristallo Lead Way in USEF Selection Trial Standings for U.S. Show Jumping Team

More than halfway home in the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and clear rounds are at a premium. McLain Ward and Rothchild won the Third Selection Trial presented by Fidelity Investments with the fastest time, but Richard Spooner found himself on top of the Selection Trials standings after a masterful round in blustery conditions with Cristallo.

Guillerme Jorge’s track was every bit of 1.60m and made for some very challenging jumping, especially in a new venue for the first time. The vast grass stadium in the infield of the steeplechase course made for a very different setting than the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The horses who jumped clean did so in a variety of techniques, but brave horses and forward riding prevailed.

Monday and Tuesday team coaches Michael Freund and Peter Tischer were on hand from Germany to provide training sessions for the WEG candidates. After having seen improvement over the weekend in dressage, most of the session focused on the marathon and the cones phases.

Am I Blue +/ Named Arabian Horse Association Distance Horse of the Year for 2009

The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) announced Am I Blue+/ (Red Wings Royalty x Petrovna), owned by Louise and Bruce Burton of Okmulgee, OK, as the 2009 Distance Horse of the Year. The notable award recognizes an Arabian or Half-Arabian with significant accomplishments in distance riding sports. Am I Blue, known as “Ducky,” topped off an excellent year with a championship at the AHA National Championship 100-Mile Endurance Ride in the Half-Arabian division on October 27 in Stillwater, OK. Ducky and Burton finished the 100-mile ride in 11 hours.

Each time a horse is named the Distance Horse of the Year, its name is added to a perpetual bronze sculpture trophy designed by Joe Staheli that is displayed at the AHA office in Aurora, CO.

Plagued by injury and lameness for almost three years after Burton bought the mare, Ducky’s partnership with Burton began bumpy. After a few adjustments were made to Ducky’s pace and gait, Burton and Ducky began to thrive, and the pair earned the championship spot at the Region 9 Endurance Championship in 2008 and then again in 2009.

“Mike Beasley told me I needed to canter more and trot less,” said Burton. As Ducky’s pace quickened, she was often awarded the Best Conditioned with a 15 pulse, which made Burton realize the mare could handle a 100-mile ride and produce winning times.
