Hoofprints from the Heart: Returning to Roland

Partners on the field and friends for life, a gift of love was the reckoning force that parted comrades Paul Spiers and Roland. An ironic twist of fate brought them back together in a way neither could have foreseen—testing their strength, trying their patience, and ultimately, adding a new dimension to a seasoned friendship.

Playing polo was not one of those lifelong goals Paul Spiers set out to conquer. Rather, it conquered him. In generous terms, he didn’t know much about the game. Working in a Boston hospital through graduate school, Paul admits he wasn’t the typical equestrian found in the inner circles of Boston’s elite. He was a hit-the-books type who would soon become one of the world’s more promising forensic neuropsychologists, conducting studies on a controversial sugar substitute, and guiding students at Harvard and MIT. But after a few English riding lessons at a barn on Cape Cod, this scientist was hooked, and already, polo lay in careful wait, determined to make him a part of the game.

The Chatsworth International Horse Trials cross-country course has been modified to challenge the riders, perhaps more than the horses, in the FEI World Cup Qualifier (CIC***-W) to be held at Chatsworth, GA, April 8-10. The course for the FEI World Cup Qualifying event (CIC***W) will be run over 3,600 meters with 30 numbered fences and 40 jumping efforts. “Most of the fences that seemed to cause too much trouble last year will be changed a bit to make it a bit more rider friendly,” said Executive Director Jack Pollard. “The course was almost completely rebuilt last year so there will not be a huge amount of changes, but everything will be shuffled around."

From the February 2005 issue of EQUESTRIAN magazine: Charity Begins with Horses

Although the winter holidays are long past, the spirit of giving can continue in your daily life. Charities are in need of funds and volunteers on a day-to-day basis, and as a horseman you have many choices as to where your donation and efforts can do the most good.

Sometimes it seems we are inundated with pleas from every group on earth. Most charities do wonderful work with the money you send them, but there are a few that perform more vital services than others. Also, many charities promote the important work they undertake, while others seem to operate more quietly. In this world, how can you know that every dollar you send goes to helping horsemen or horses in need?
