Willie Tynan and Victoriano Triumph in Seven- and Eight-Year-Old Young Jumpers at Showplace Spring Spectacular

The Showplace Spring Spectacular Horse Show got under way with its second day of competition on June 3 at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL. The Six-Year-Old and Seven- and Eight-Year-Old Young Jumper divisions were held in the grand prix ring this morning, with courses set by Canadian course designer David Ballard. The show will be held over two weeks and will run through June 14, 2009.

Willie Tynan rode Victoriano, owned by Liz Millikin of Millwood, VA, to the win in the first class of the Seven- and Eight-Year-Old Young Jumpers. Only four entries earned the chance to advance to the speed round, and it was Tynan and Victoriano who had the fastest round in a time of 31.409 seconds to take home the blue ribbon. Lauren Tisbo rode Varina, owned by Tequestrian Farms of Barrington, IL, to the only other clear round in a time of 35.890 seconds to earn second place.

Third place was awarded to Tommy Fiegel and Bling It On, owned by Chuck Waters of Sparr, FL, with four faults in a time of 29.107 seconds. Fourth place went to Tisbo aboard Norlam Des Etisses, owned by Tequestrian Farms, with eight faults and a time of 45.181 seconds.

Class winner Victoriano is a seven-year-old Argentinean bred gelding that Tynan began riding this past winter. "This is basically his first season showing; he kind of had a late start in life, but he is very nice and he likes his job," Tynan said. "He is still growing too; he is 17.2 hands plus, and he has taken a little bit of time to fill out, but he is coming out great. He did the 1.15m and the 1.20m classes in Florida, and he was pretty consistent. I had a first or second in most of the classes with him."

"He is an easy guy," Tynan added. "He is just a little green so you have to guide him a little bit. I thought that the course was good for him today. It rode well and there were no bogey fences, so it was a nice track for the younger horses."

Tynan plans to keep doing the seven- and eight-year-old classes with Victoriano for the rest of the season, and then hopes to maybe move him up to the 1.35m or the 1.40m classes later in the year. "He has enough scope and enough jump, so he just needs to get a little more experience," he stated.

Tynan is originally from Ireland and just moved to the United States two years ago. He started out on the East Coast last season and just bought a farm in Battle Creek, MI. "This is our first time to come to a show in the Midwest since we moved here, so this is my first time here at Lamplight," Tynan explained. "Everything is really nice here. We didn't actually plan to stay for the second week, but at the moment we might want to be here. We have a guy in the grand prix on Saturday and the Welcome Stake tomorrow, so we will see how he goes, and then we have some new ones that we might ship in for next week as well."

The Six-Year-Old Young Jumpers also competed in the grand prix ring, with a class win going to Nick Novak and Rendezvous 22, owned by Nancy Whitehead of Richmond, IL. Five horse-and-rider combinations went clear in the first round and advanced to the jump-off, and of those five, four went double clear. Novak and Rendezvous 22 were the fastest of those double-clear rounds, coming through the timers in 37.243 seconds for the win.

Second-place honors were awarded to Steve Schaefer and Caribe, owned by Steve Schaefer, Dawn Faulkner Rozran, and Jane Stickland, with a clear round in 37.868 seconds. Third-place honors went to Wilhelm Genn and L'etoile, owned by Wilhelm and Patty Genn of Lebanon, OH, with a fault-free round in 40.802 seconds.

Fourth place was also awarded to Genn riding Ariano, owned by Audrey Samara of Munster, IN, with a clear round in 41.004 seconds. The final round to jump off was Erin Ferguson and Get Smart, owned by Captivate Farms, LLC, of Schoolcraft, MI, who had four faults in a time of 42.702 seconds to earn fifth place.
