2008 Dallas Harvest Horse Show Wrap-Up

The 2008 Dallas Harvest Horse Show, held at the Texas Rose Horse Park, was a huge success. The sold-out event played host to more than 400 horse-and-rider teams during the five-day competition. Unsurpassed hospitality, plenty of prize money, specialty classes and fundraisers for Habitat for Horses were just a few of the things that made the show so spectacular.

In the grand prix ring, a Sunday Grand Prix Brunch kicked off the $25,000 Harvest Grand Prix. The grand prix was sponsored by October Hill Farm and the Davis Family.

For the second year in a row, the winner of the $25,000 Harvest Grand Prix was Tracy Fenney and horse MTM Timon. This is Fenney's seventh grand prix win at the Dallas Harvest Horse Show. She was also riding in front of a home crowd.

Spain Wins Individual Gold as U.S. Battles Illness and Elements at the World Endurance Championship, Terengganu, Malaysia, November 6-9, 2008

Besting a championship field of riders, Spain’s Maria Alvarez Ponton galloped home to Gold on Nobby, with a ride time of 8:48:06. Argentinean rider, Agustin Vita, riding Baraka Ibn Al Tamah won Silver, and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem of the United Arab Emirates gained the Bronze on Tazoul El Parry at the 2008 World Endurance Championship held at Terengganu, Malaysia, on the edge of the South China Sea. Nobby and Ponton were also awarded the Best Condition. The first 10 riders finished within one hour of the winning time. The Gulf countries of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain swept Team Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively.

Kathy Brunjes riding Theatric was the first member of the United States team to finish (in 24th position) while Valerie Kanavy riding Flash Flame came in shortly after her in 25th place. The six member U.S. squad finished one team and one individual rider after an exceptional run of bad luck. Team member, John Crandell riding Saba Shams, was eliminated at Gate Two for lameness. Cheryl Dell, riding one of the highest rated horses, Reason To Believe, was stricken with a debilitating illness and had to withdraw at the same gate. Early in the ride, a heavy rain storm caused flooding on the trail, but it was the bolt of lightning that ended U.S. hopes. When lightning struck a tree as Jan Worthington on the aptly named, Golden Lightning, and Meg Sleeper on Syrocco Reveille, traveled through the water on the trail, the horses received the shock.

Unwanted Horse Council Continues to Compile List of Facilities to Accept Horses

The Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) seeks more facilities that accept, place or use horses to list themselves on the UHC website. Currently, there are over 200 facilities listed. “This is a continuing process for the coalition,” said Dr. Tom Lenz, UHC Chairman. “We have received many inquiries, not only from horse owners who are seeking retirement homes or second careers for their horses, but also from people who are interested in adopting a horse or volunteering at equine placement organizations. We expect that this online directory will continue to furnish valuable information to all these people, and in doing so, be good for the horses.”

Olympian Debbie McDonald Draws a Crowd for New England Dressage Association Fall Symposium

Olympian Debbie McDonald filled the house as this year's featured clinician at the New England Dressage Association's (NEDA) Annual Fall Symposium. The annual event, which has hosted such leading clinicians as Anky van Grunsven, Klaus Balkenhol and Ingrid Klimke, draws hundreds of riders and trainers from throughout the Northeastern U.S.

With her popular partner, the Hanoverian mare Brentina, McDonald, a member of the 2008 and 2004 U.S. Olympic dressage teams, is one of America's most successful dressage competitors, counting among her list of titles that of World Cup champion and National Grand Prix Champion. Despite her own competitive successes, McDonald's focus at this year's NEDA symposium, held October 31–November 2, was less about how to achieve competitive success and more about how to put the welfare of the horse first in training.

"I want a world where people don't think of the horse as a tool," McDonald told symposium attendees. "Horses have become a tool to success instead of a partner. I would love to be able to let people know that you can have both without sacrificing the welfare of the horse."
