FEI World Reining Masters Finals: U.S. Reiners Craig Schmersal and Tim McQuay Thrill the Crowd with Gold and Silver
The much awaited second $100,000 FEI World Reining Masters Finals, presented by the Arcese Group and the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, saw a full house and was truly a tribute to the sport of reining.
Craig Schmersal, riding Tidal Wave Jack, received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd, who had a chance to witness one of the most exciting runs in the history of the sport, all at the Palasturla Facility in Manerbio, Italy, on Saturday night, September 24. Schmersal performed NRHA pattern number five to perfection, earning a score of 231.5, which put him and the powerful nine-year-old bay stallion by Hollywood Macho Jac and out of Tidal Mist Cody on the highest step of the podium in the $75,000 Open Division.

Scott Monroe First in 2005 USEF National Combined Driving Singles Championship
Taking a year off from competing doesn’t work for everyone, but it paid off for Scott Monroe of Sharon, CT, who drove his way to his first national championship at the 2005 USEF National Combined Driving Singles Championship, which was part of the CAI-B Gladstone Driving Event, September 22-25.

Alex Maida Wins USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals – West Coast
With nary a misstep, Alex Maida, was picked as the winner of the grueling 2005 USEF West Coast Talent Search. The class was held in conjunction with the Los Angeles International Jumping Festival at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, September 21-25. Thirty-eight junior riders qualified throughout the year for a spot in the two-day four-phase finals.

2005 Arabian Sport Horse Nationals Exceed Expectations
The Sport Horse National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (Sport
Horse Nationals) topped out at 550 horses this year, exceeding by 100 the
original number forecast by the Arabian Horse Association (AHA), which produced
the show.
“It’s just incredible,” said Show Commission Chair Ed Peterson of Charles City, VA. “The feedback we’re getting from people confirms to me what a great concept this sport horse event is, and how much our members love having a national outlet to showcase their sport horses.”

Paso Fino Horse Association Grand National Championship a Success
Day five of the 33rd Paso Fino Horse Association Grand National Championship Show included the Bellas Formas Geldings Championship, won by El Siglo De La Hacienda, shown by Rick and Janice Meyer, and owned by Christine Meyer. El Siglo De La Hacienda went on to carry his owner to the top in Equitation Junior 13-17. Insolito de Estaban, owned by James and Loretta Stephens and ridden by Milda Minter, once again took top honors in the Versatility class. An exciting Performance Mares class saw Maraquita La Rosa Tres, ridden by Alei Ortiz and owned by Davis Love III, crowned champion.

Great Southwest Fall Classic Reduced to a Four-Day Event
After discussion with trainers and the USEF, show management has decided to reduce the Great Southwest Fall Classic in Katy, TX, to a four-day event. This change will hopefully allow for an easier and safer return to the Houston area for some people and their horses. The show will start on Thursday, September 29, at 7:30 a.m. and finish on Sunday.

American Saddlebred Registry Sweepstakes Total Payout Increases by 14% to $139,434
The American Saddlebred Registry Sweepstakes, held during the All American Horse Classic in Indianapolis, September 6-10, had a 14% increase in its total payout from 2004 to 2005. The 2005 total payout was $139,434 compared to $122,353 one year before.

USEF Hurricane Equine Relief Fund - Make a Donation Online Now
The USEF has established the Hurricane Equine Relief Fund to assist those agencies working directly with the equine victims and refugees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The money will be used to support efforts to deliver food, veterinary services and shelter for horses and ponies in the hurricane-stricken areas. Work Continues to Help Unwanted Horses
The equine industry’s work on behalf of unwanted horses continued to gain momentum this week as representatives from 20 organizations met to advance the efforts that began at the nation’s first Unwanted Horse Summit in Washington, DC, in April. Gathering on September 21 at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) headquarters in Schaumburg, IL, the group focused on solidifying its mission and building a long-term organizational structure.
