The Show Goes On: Medlock Proves her Mettle and Wins the Platinum Performance/USEF Talent Search Finals-West
The first of the two Platinum Performance USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals provided top-class competition despite a nasty battle with Mother Nature, which resulted in lots of cancelled classes and some creative competition management by the Los Angeles International Horse Show. Held in Griffith Park, the horse show was abbreviated by a powerful storm on Friday night that knocked out power to the show grounds and over 25,000 homes in the surrounding area. This warranted the cancellation of many of Saturday’s classes, but the Talent Search continued and Natalie Rae Medlock of Orange, CA, prevailed as the champion of the West.

Dressage at Devon Presented by WTDirect Attracts Big Fields and Quality Horses for the 33rd Annual Competition Baseball is baseball, but baseball at Fenway Park or Wrigley Field is a whole new ballgame. Horse racing is horse racing, but watching the field come around the turn at Saratoga provides goosebumps race after race. Show jumping is show jumping, but at Spruce Meadows the mountains make a difference. Dressage is dressage, but Dressage at Devon is a completely unique experience. Located in Berwyn, PA, the 33rd consecutive running of the show has attracted some of the country’s best horses and riders, including Individual Gold medalist from the 2007 Pan American Games, Christopher Hickey and last year’s Grand Prix winner, Courtney King. King is bringing six horses from her Bedford, NY, base to Devon this week, including her two grand prix stars Idocus and Mythilus.

USEF Announces Licensed Connemara and Welsh Judges’ Clinic to be Held October 20
The USEF is pleased to announce the 2007 Connemara and Welsh Judges’ Clinic to be held Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Rancho Cordova, CA, and Starr Vaughn Equestrian in Elk Grove, CA. This clinic is being offered to all Federation-licensed Connemara and Welsh judges and any applicants or potential applicants for these licenses. Attendance at the clinic fulfills the Federation’s clinic requirements as outlined in GR1040 of the current Federation Rule Book.

New Footing Will Greet Pennsylvania National Horse Show Competitors
At its fall meeting, September 10, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show (PNHS) Association Board voted to purchase new footing for the large arena at the Farm Show Complex, where the show is held.
The new footing, composed of 70% limestone and 30% sand, will replace the footing that has been in place since the arena was constructed in 1939, according to Farm Show Complex Assistant Director Larry Weaver. It will be installed in late September, first used for the Pennsylvania State 4-H Show, and in place for the opening horn of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show on October 18.

United States Dressage Federation Announces 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Ellin Dixon Miller at the Salute Gala on November 30, 2007, at the Adequan/USDF Annual Convention in Orlando, FL. Award winners are those who have shown a lifetime of dedication to USDF through volunteering and developing programs, projects and committees that have contributed to USDF's mission. They also have a long history of membership in USDF.

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) will induct Major General Jonathan “Jack” Burton, Hilda Gurney and Edgar Hotz into the Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame (HOF) at the Salute Gala on November 30, 2007, during the Adequan/USDF Annual Convention in Orlando, FL. FEI Statement on Medication and Doping Control Procedures
The FEI does not report the existence of a positive case until the earlier of the following: the results of an initial (“A”) test are accepted by the person responsible, or the results of a confirmatory (“B”) test also return a positive result. Importing Your Horse Through Miami? USDA Miami Import Center to Allow Online Reservations Beginning Mid-November
On November 19, 2007, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will begin using the Veterinary Services Process Streamlining (VSPS) web-based system to take online reservations for the USDA Animal Import Center in Miami, FL. This change applies only to the Miami import center, though it is expected that the import center in Rock Tavern, NY, will begin to use the VSPS system for online reservations in early 2008.

FEI Takes Proactive Stance Within the FEI Coach Education System
Creating a solid base to any structure will ensure that further up the line the order and overall cohesiveness is maintained. Indeed, to not sound too cryptic, good foundations are a must when you want to continue building onwards and upwards. As part of the FEI Development Strategy, ensuring this very cohesiveness at the base, a workshop for FEI tutors was held in Geneva, Switzerland, just under two months ago—with an objective of bringing the tutors together and solidifying both their knowledge and the ways they impart it—that is—creating a consistency which would run throughout all FEI courses.

2007 USEA/Spalding Labs Young Event Horse Series Championships Wrap-Up
The 2007 USEA/Spalding Labs Young Event Horse (YEH) Series Championships took place on September 12 at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL, the day before the opening of the Wellpride American Eventing Championships. The YEH competition was designed to identify the upper-level event horses of the future, and Hanno (Windfall II x Hulta) has made his mark as a definite contender. Last year the Trakehner gelding, the first U.S.-bred offspring of Darren Chiacchia's Olympic partner Windfall, claimed the four-year-old championship, and this year he came back to win top honors in the five-year-old division. Bred by Dr. Timothy and Cheryl Holekamp, he is ridden by Chiacchia, who shares time in the saddle with the horse's owner Jean Kopperud.
