Lauren Hogan and High Fashion Crowned Overall Wild Horsefeathers/USEF Grand Hunter Pony Champion

Although storms and much-needed rain poured down on the Bluegrass State on the evening of August 13, a young lady from the Sunshine State took home a treasure trove of silver, a Pessoa saddle, and a Blue Ribbon Custom Blanket by Royal Rider appliquéd with their new accolades. Lauren Hogan, 13, and High Fashion, a seven-year-old medium pony mare, won with a score of 1,033 points. High Fashion is owned by Laura King-Kaplan, and Hogan is trained by Bill Schaub of Orlando, FL. They bested nearly 250 ponies to win the Wild Horsefeathers/USEF Grand Hunter Pony Championship.

Maitozo and Benjamin Turn in Golden Performances at 2005 USEF/AVA National Vaulting Championships

In a crowd-capturing performance, vaulting’s revered Devon Maitozo, of Simi Valley, CA, once again claimed the right to the golden title as Men’s National Champion, at the 2005 USEF/AVA National Vaulting Championships in Denver, CO, August 11-14. Vaulting atop Mozart, a Warmblood gelding, longed by Carolyn Bland and owned by FACE Vaulters, Maitozo performed his technical test to John Lennon’s “Imagine,” followed by a flawless freestyle performance that left the panel of five judges with no choice but to reward the pair with the obvious win.

Stephanie Danhakl and In Sync Named Grand Champions of 2005 Show Circuit Magazine/USEF National Junior Hunter Championships—West Coast

In an amazing dual victory of sorts, Stephanie Danhakl of Pacific Palisades, CA, and her horse In Sync, claimed their second National Championship victories, respectively, at the fifth annual Show Circuit Magazine/USEF National Junior Hunter Championships-West Coast in San Juan Capistrano, CA, August 16-17.

California’s Annie Laurie Cook Takes Home the Gold Medal in the Adequan/USEF Pony Jumper Individual Championship

At the end of a heated jump-off, Annie Laurie Cook from Woodside, CA, took home the coveted Gold medal in a two-ride jump-off to determine the top two finishers. Posting the only completely clean set of rounds during the Individual Jumper competition, she finished the jump-off on a time of 41.295.

Zone 3 Wins Adequan/USEF Pony Jumper National Team Championship

Youthful enthusiasm, team spirit and riding skill were all in-sync on the evening of August 11 for the young riders representing Zone 3 at the Adequan/USEF Pony Jumper Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park. The exciting and hotly contested competition was determined by just one rail as Zone 3 with 12 faults narrowly defeated Zone 2 with 16 faults and was awarded the Willow Grove Farm Perpetual Trophy. Zone 8 was third with 29 faults.

Annie Davidson Wins the 2005 USEF Pony Medal Championship

In the blistering summer heat, Annie Davidson, age 12, of Newton, PA, was named champion of the 2005 Pony Medal Championship held at the Kentucky Horse Park on August 11. The championship was held as part of the USEF Pony Finals, August 10-13. Davidson received the Easter Sunday Memorial Perpetual Trophy, a cooler and tack trunk donated by Oakcroft Tack Trunk.

Adrienne Sternlicht on Vanity Fair Wins 2005 Wild Horsefeathers/USEF Green Pony Hunter Championship

Adrienne Sternlicht, on the seven year old gelding Vanity Fair, won yesterday’s 2005 Wild Horsefeathers / USEF Green Pony Hunter Championship. The championship was held as part of the USEF Pony Finals being held August 10-13 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. As champion, the twelve year old Sternlicht and “Coco,” a large pony, walked away with the Brownland Farm Perpetual Trophy, a Blue Ribbon Custom Blanket by Royal Rider, a ten-inch Revere bowl keeper trophy and a Pessoa saddle. Her trainer is Patricia Griffith.

The Fiesta in the Park Reining Show, slated for August 24-28, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, features the Adequan®/USEF Open Reining Championship, plus a whole week of reining action. A special highlight will be the Fiesta Horsemen Symposium on Saturday, August 27.

USEF Announces Hackney Rule Forums

The USEF will host two open rule forums in the coming month, to discuss rules as they apply to the Hackney division. The first will take place during the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville, KY, on Thursday, August 25 at approximately 3 p.m., in the Lock-Heather room at the Executive West Hotel. This forum will immediately follow the American Hackney Horse Society’s Board Meeting, which begins at 1 p.m.

The first email was sent to members on Monday, August 8; and a second was sent on Monday, August 15. USEF Members Offered Discount at AAEP Horseman's Day

The annual American Association of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) Horseman's Day is scheduled for Sunday, December 4, in Seattle, WA, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel and Towers. Horseman's Day runs in conjuction with the AAEP's Annual Convention, and provides horse owners and other attendees with up-to-date health care information. Presentation topics include dentistry, purchase exams, wound management and bandaging, laminitis and the plight of the unwanted horse.

Arabian Youth Nationals Awhirl with Competition and Activities

The Youth National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show (Youth Nationals) celebrated its 13th anniversary when it returned to Expo New Mexico in Albuquerque on July 23-30. This year's event showcased more than 1,000 of the nation’s best Arabians, Half-Arabians and Anglo-Arabians from the United States and Canada competing in 124 classes with their talented young riders.

Australia Has Top Two In World Cup Eventing FinalClayton, and Hoy

At the end of a thrilling jumping phase, Australia’s Clayton Fredericks came out as the worthy winner of the 2005 FEI Eventing World Cup Final. Performing a magnificent clear round, he retained his overnight score of 42 penalties. The second place went to yet another Australian, Andrew Hoy, who had one rail down and one time penalty to finish on 44.3. Piia Pantsu of Finland followed in third position only 0.1 points behind Hoy (44.4).

The USEF is now accepting nominations for the 2005 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. The USEF Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose lifetime experience and accomplishments exemplify uncommon devotion to the sport of competition with horses and whose equestrian career and horsemanship have continually elevated the sport’s excellence. This year’s honoree will be presented the Jimmy A. Williams Trophy during the 2006 USEF Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Danielle Torano Celebrates $50,000 Vermont Grand Prix Victory

Danielle Torano of Fort Lauderdale, FL, won the $50,000 Vermont Summer Celebration Grand Prix to conclude the five-week Vermont Summer Festival show jumping tournament, which ran July 13-August 14 in East Dorset, VT.

Prince Set to Defend Title at American Gold Cup, September 15-18

Kimberly Prince of Hume, VA, will defend her title in the $75,000 American Gold Cup, September 15-18, at the Devon show grounds. Prince, who competed at the Gold Cup last year as Kimberly Frey, won the Gold Cup on the mare, Marlou, and placed second in the Welcome Stake Friday evening on Couletto K James.

EQUUS Foundation Awards Over $150,000 in Grants in 2005

The EQUUS Foundation, Inc., an all-volunteer charitable alliance of horse lovers, announced its 2005 grant awards. Over $150,000 was recently awarded to 19 charitable organizations that promote the positive use of the horse for the benefit of the general public and equestrian sport as a whole.

Fourth Zada Enterprises, LLC, Dressage at the National to be Featured at 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival

The fourth Zada Enterprises, LLC, Dressage at the National will be held December 2-4, 2005, at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, FL, in conjunction with the 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival (November 29-December 4). Dressage competition from training level through grand prix, including the popular musical freestyles, will highlight two rings, with more than 100 horses expected to compete. Judges officiating will be: Major General Jonathan ‘Jack’ R. Burton (S) of Fort Belvoir, VA; Colonel A. R. Kitts (S) of Newville, PA; and Gary Rockwell (C) of Wellington, FL. Klaus Fraessdorf will manage the show for the fourth consecutive year.

Federal Highway Legislation Approved with Recreational Trails Program Funding

President Bush has signed into law the $300 billion federal highway funding bill, known as SAFETEA-LU, approved by Congress just before it broke for the August-Labor Day recess. The controversial legislation took over two years to agree to and enact, requiring numerous Continuing Resolutions extending the prior federal highway bill past its expiration.
