2008 Olympic Equestrian Events Moved to Hong Kong
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr. Patrick Ho, welcomed the International Olympic Committee's decision to name Hong Kong as the venue for the equestrian events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The announcement came on June 8. Dr. Ho also thanked the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) for its confidence in Hong Kong.

New Resources for the Breeding Community with Launch of Performance Horse Registry E-Newsletter and New Design of www.phr.com
The first edition of the Performance Horse Registry (PHR) e-newsletter, American Breeder News, was sent on Friday, July 8. A breeder-savvy publication about sport horse breeding in North America, American Breeder News will continue to be delivered to subscriber’s e-mail boxes every month, offering the latest news affecting the breeding industry from the PHR, breed registries across the United States and American breeders themselves.
This launch coincides with the unveiling of the PHR’s redesigned website, www.phr.com. In addition to featuring information contained in American Breeder News, the new website offers a regularly updated news section on the homepage.

Research on USEF Members Will Help Sponsorship and Advertising Sales
A recent study profiling the USEF membership (18 and over) provides data important for advertising sales for the Federation’s publications, and is a tremendous asset in USEF efforts to obtain more sponsorship and commercial participation for equestrian sport. These efforts help fund current USEF programs; create new programs; and fund the international teams. Sport sponsorship is a hugely competitive arena and the USEF now has its own proprietary data to assist in the sales effort.

2005 FEI World Combined Pony Driving Championships Update: USEF Announces Team and Individual Drivers and Ponies
The USEF has announced the team members and ponies which will be competing at the 2005 FEI World Combined Pony Driving Championships in Catton Park, England this week. The competition begins on Wednesday, July 13, with the official inspection of ponies, followed by two days of dressage, the marathon on Saturday, and obstacle driving on Sunday.

Highlights from 2005 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event on KET
Each year, one of the world's most prestigious equestrian sports events takes place at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Farnam, brings together some of the greatest horses and riders from around the world. KET presents highlights from this year's event, which took place April 28-May 1, with its broadcast of 2005 Rolex Equestrian Championships, presented by Lexus, airing Sunday, July 30 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time/9 p.m. Central Time on KET1. The program originally aired on May 8 on NBC.

Junior Dressage Riders: Want to Compete at Devon?
As a reminder to all junior dressage riders, the 2005 USEF Junior Dressage Team Championship, sponsored by Collecting Gaits Farm, the Dutta Corporation and Performance Sales International, will be held at Dressage at Devon, September 27-October 2. In order to be eligible for this championship program, an Application of Intent must be submitted to the USEF office by Monday, August 1. Applications are available on USEF.org.

Shawn Flarida Becomes Lawson Bronze Trophy Open Champion at the 2005 World Reining Trophy
For the second time, Daniel Straumann and his team organized the World Reining Trophy (WRT) at the HorseAcademy facility in Mooslargue, France. There was a total purse of more than $100,000. Shawn Flarida called the show "one of the best reining events of the world"–-and this was before his success in the Open.

USEF Now Accepting Nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award—The Jimmy A. Williams Trophy
The USEF is now accepting nominations for the 2005 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award. The USEF Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose lifetime experience and accomplishments exemplify uncommon devotion to the sport of competition with horses and whose equestrian career and horsemanship have continually elevated the sport’s excellence. This year’s honoree will be presented the Jimmy A. Williams trophy during the 2006 USEF Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.

Schuyler Riley Makes History with Chrysler Classic Win at 2005 North American at Spruce Meadows
For the second year in a row, Schuyler Riley and Opus Sept won the $175,000 Chrysler Classic at the North American at Spruce Meadows in Canada. Riley defended her title successfully, topping Athens Olympic Gold medalist Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil for the win. With this unprecedented victory, Riley galloped her way into the show jumping record books as well.
In addition to being the only woman to ever win the Chrysler Classic, Riley becomes the first back-to-back winner of this challenging event in the 15 years it has been held at the North American, CSI*****. The only other horse-and-rider combination to post consecutive victories in this demanding derby challenge was Canadian Ian Millar and his legendary equine partner Big Ben.

Tragedy Strikes Tylord Farm
Lightning struck Tylord Farm in Benson, VT, during the early hours of June 14 in the form of a violent summer storm. Fire raged through their stallion barn/indoor arena, destroying the structure and killing all six horses stabled inside, including world-acclaimed Trakehner stallion, Enrico Caruso. Other horses losing their lives in the fire included Laiken's last son, Emelio; Trinidad, a three-year-old gelding by Leonardo da Vinci; and Lilli Bieler's young stallion, Leonardo da Vinci, also by Enrico Caruso.

Paso Fino Foundation Awards Scholarships
The Paso Fino Foundation Youth Scholarship Committee announced that it has awarded $15,000 in scholarships to five deserving young members. The committee, which began working to fund the program in July 2004, has raised more than $60,000 to date.

Cathy Weischoff Win Three-Day Event at Maui Jim Wayne
In a nail biting finish, Cathy Weischhoff from Lexington, KY, and her Thoroughbred gelding, Ocotillo, jumped a textbook show jumping round to win the Advanced Horse Trials at Maui Jim Wayne, July 8-10, in Wayne, IN. This was a Gold Cup division which kicked off the mid-western section of the series. Second was Ursula Brush (who trains with Weischoff) riding Bru Maguire.

2005 FEI World Reining Masters Series Presented by the Arcese Group
Following the FEI European Reining Championships held in Manerbio, Italy, last May, preparations are under way for the second finals edition of the $100,000 FEI World Reining Masters Series, presented by the Arcese Group, which will be held on September 22-25, 2005. The finals of the prestigious competition, which were held in Oklahoma City during the National Reining Horse Association Futurity last year, will be hosted at the beautiful Palasturla facility located in Manerbio, Italy.

Patty Stovel and Shandor 41 Win $50,000 HITS Culpeper Grand Prix
Patty Stovel rode Shandor 41, a 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding, to the win in Sunday's $50,000 HITS Grand Prix at HITS Culpeper Showday National. Jerry Dougherty of Geneva, IL, set a challenging first-round course that saw four horses advance to the jump-off. Stovel was the fastest of three double-clears with 40.69 seconds on the clock. Second place went to Megan Moran riding Quarnak De Longprec. Eliza Ferguson Shuford rode Larentino to third place. Beth Underhill finished in fourth place with Magdaline.
