Jimmy Torano and Marcel Win Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championship
With only one time fault to speak of in the second round of the June 12 competition, Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and his mount Marcel, out-jumped 14 competitors to take home the championship trophy, $30,000 in prize money, and the elegant Rolex watch at the $150,000 Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championship in Saugerties. As he was presented with his winnings, an ebullient Torano said, “I told my groom that if we won today, I’d give him my Rolex. I didn’t know they were giving one for this. It’s great—now we both have one!”

2004 Olympic Show Jumping Medals Redistributed: Pessoa of Brazil Gets Gold, U.S. Rider Kappler Awarded Silver
Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil and Chris Kappler of the United States moved up to Gold and Silver medals respectively when the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport, officially disqualified Individual Gold medalist Cian O’Connor of Ireland from the 2004 Olympic Games, due to a positive drug test on his horse Waterford Crystal.

Rotterdam Marks the Halfway Point in the Samsung Super League
Rotterdam, the Dutch city named after a dam in the river Rotte, plays host to the fourth leg of the 2005 Samsung Super League on Friday, June 16.
The largest sea port in the world and one of the biggest cities in The Netherlands with its population of just under 600,000 people, Rotterdam is a powerhouse of activity at any time, but this weekend horsepower takes precedence over every other kind as the best show jumping teams in the world meet up once again in the latest leg of the Samsung Super League series.

Three-time Olympian Kathy Kusner Inducted into World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame
Three-time Olympic show jumper Kathy Kusner was welcomed as one of the newest honorees to the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, June 8. Kusner joined fellow honorees Drew Bledsoe (Dallas Cowboys quarterback) and Louis Zamperini (1936 Olympic runner) for the induction ceremonies at the Boise Center on the Grove in Boise, ID. All were singled out for their efforts as role models and humanitarians at the 11th annual induction ceremonies.

Christina Derango Named AHA 2004 Youth of the Year
Christina Derango was selected as Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Youth of the Year for her personal achievements, dedication to AHA and for her community involvement. As Youth of the Year, she will represent the Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) as a breed ambassador. The 17-year-old Derango will make appearances at the 2005 AHYA Convention and Youth Nationals. Youth of the Year award recipients are selected from AHA youth members across the U.S. and Canada.

Virginia Horse Center Site of Third Annual Arabian Sport Horse Nationals
The third annual Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Sport Horse National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Show will be held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA, September 21-25, 2005. See Arabians, Half-Arabians and Anglo-Arabians demonstrating supreme athleticism in 69 classes in four divisions: sport horse in-hand and under-saddle, dressage, pleasure carriage driving and hunter/jumper.

The USEF is accepting bids for the 2006 FEI World Reining Masters. Bids must be received by Friday, July 15, 2005, to be considered. This marks the third FEI World Reining Masters, and the second time the event will be hosted by North America. The inaugural FEI World Reining Masters took place in Oklahoma City, OK, in 2004.

Change of Venue For USEF Youth Reining Qualifiers: Eden Park Equestrian Center Replaces Lake Erie College

East Coast Vaulting Championships Set for July 15-17 in Virginia
Rapid growth of vaulting in the eastern United States has resulted in more recognized vaulting competitions for area athletes this season. Region IX of the American Vaulting Association (AVA), covering all states from Maine to Mississippi, will be hosting the first East Coast Regional Vaulting Championships July 15-17, 2005, at Fairfax County’s Frying Pan Park, in Herndon, VA. The competition is recognized by the USEF and the AVA and will contribute to national rankings and regional high points awards.

American Royal Announces New Footing
Recognizing that arena soil is one of the most basic and important factors required to ensure a successful equestrian/agricultural event, the American Royal Association, a 106-year old institution, unveiled new footing for all its fall and year-round events. The Royal experienced significant growth in its horse shows last year with some events increasing nearly 40%. After last year’s fall show, the American Royal formed a Footing Task Force to address the needs of its exhibitors.

Bjorn Ikast Returns to the Colorado Horse Park to Defend His Show Jumping Titles
International equestrian show jumping athlete Bjorn Ikast will return to the Colorado Horse Park this July to defend the two show jumping grand prix titles he claimed in 2004. Ikast will also attempt to become the only rider to win the Colorado Horse Park Triple Crown as he takes on some of the best riders in the country and from around the world.
