Classic Company Goes Back To The Future wth Boutique Horse Show
Taking a cue from a favorite movie theme, Bob Bell, President of Classic Company, took a bold step forward by stepping back into a historically rich venue with the hope of returning horse shows to their roots of grandeur, tradition, and simple pleasures.
During the spring of 2008 Bell found inspiration in his own back yard, during a leisurely drive around scenic Tryon, NC, where he has a mountain-top cabin. The car came to a stop at Harmon Field, and Bell began to develop a script. Steeped in equestrian and personal history, visions of his start as a horse show steward to imagining the awe of the 1956 Olympic stars training on these hallowed grounds filled Bell with an overwhelming sense of “this is what we’re missing,” a more intimate gathering of equestrians, rewarding their success with precious mementos, and creating a social atmosphere through special treats like Mimosa Sundays. From this theme came the debut of the Tryon May Classic Boutique Show over Memorial Day weekend, the first USEF "A" rated event to grace historic Harmon Field in over 20 years.
Like any good Director, Bell chose a cast that would enhance the competition by inviting two of the most admired and respected names in the industry, Betty Reynolds Oare and Ernest Oare, as judges. Betty Oare’s father was National Show Hunter Hall of Fame horseman Arthur Reynolds. “It’s really fun to come back and judge at Harmon Field, because the first horse shows I ever did in my life were at Harmon Field!” a very happy Betty Oare began. “I grew up in Tryon. When I was a kid in school, both the school and the town all closed at noontime, and everybody came to the one-day horse show. The men of the town cooked BBQ and it was an all day into the evening event.”

Connemara Breed Showcases Eventing Talent at CCI*
The Virginia Horse Center was host to the Virginia Horse Trials and CCI* during the Memorial Day weekend. Divisions ran from intermediate to beginner novice, and Connemaras were evident as ribbon winners in many divisions on many levels.
Dornin North, of Berryville, VA, rode Mitford, a half-bred gelding by Aladdin’s Denver out of a Thoroughbred mare, to win the dressage and go clean in stadium in the Open Preliminary Division, only to have the horse slip on cross-country, resulting in a fall and mandatory retiring on course. She was disappointed, but happy that the half-bred had gone so well and was leading the division.
In the Open Training division, Brittny Novak rode the half-bred Logan Go Bragh to win the blue ribbon. Logan Go-Bragh is by Hideaway’s Erin Go-Bragh. In Training Senior, Anne Baumgardner rode her half-bred gelding Mick Dreamy (Aladdin’s Denver x a Thoroughbred mare, by Babamist) to second place. Baumgardner said that she is moving Mick Dreamy up to preliminary very soon, as he has won or been in the top three of each of his training divisions in 2009.

Vaccinate Your Horse for Rabies Before Leaving for Events; Help Protect Other Competitors From This Deadly Disease
Before you hit the show circuit this season, be sure to do your part to keep horses, other animals and competitors safe by including a rabies vaccination at your pre-event health exam. Vaccinations can do more than just help horses—they can help protect horse owners from disease, too.
“Owners sometimes forget diseases that affect their horses or cattle may also affect anyone that has contact with their animal,” said April Knudson, DVM, manager, Veterinary Services, Merial. “In fact, cattle or horses infected with some diseases, like rabies, can potentially expose their human handlers, veterinary professionals or even spectators at an event or show.”

Drugs and Medications Corner: Drugs and Medications Corner—Compounding Pharmacy: Essential Need, But Be Cautious
This special section, Drugs and Medications Corner, will feature a series of articles from the USEF’s Drugs and Medications Program and the veterinary community to communicate the latest news to better educate the equine community.
"Let me start by saying that I’m a strong supporter of legitimate, medically valid compounding pharmacy practice. If used prudently, the practice of compounding plays an important role in veterinary medicine and in your horse’s health. Many horses and other animals are well served by compounded drugs. In the situation where there is not an FDA-approved drug for a particular medical condition, appropriate and judicious compounding may be an important adjunct to veterinary medicine. In a case where legitimate compounding is necessary, one must always weigh the risk versus the benefit of using a compounded (therefore not FDA-approved) medication. This involves finding high-quality, ethical compounders. I would argue that the only way to improve the likelihood of having a good compounder, realistically, would be to ensure they are ethical, concerned about the quality of the product and the well-being of the patient, and not pirates of approved drugs. "
