Grande Crimson Wins First of Three USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Selection Trials

The USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Program kicked off 2006 with the first of three official selection trials at the CDI***/Y Cincinnati and Spring Classic I & II, held May 12–14 at Paxton Farm in Batavia, OH. This USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Central Selection Trial for the FEI World Breeding Championships showcased the region’s most promising dressage prospects in their quest to qualify for Verden, Germany. Claiming the Six-Year-Old Selection Trial Championship with an overall two-test score of 7.644 was Grande Crimson, a chestnut Canadian Warmblood mare (Rio Grande x Ruby II; bred in Canada by Canterbrooke Farm) and ridden to victory by C. Michelle Folden of Greensboro, NC, for owner Andrea Driscoll of Johns Island, SC. The next USEF/Markel Young Horse Dressage Selection Trials will be held in Flintridge-La Canada, CA, May 26-28, followed by Raleigh, NC, June 2-4.



Germany Leads into Aachen, But It's Early Yet...

The host team will be hoping to establish an even more secure grip at the top of the leaderboard when the second leg of the Samsung Super League takes place in Aachen, Germany, on Friday.

Convincing winners at the opening leg in La Baule, France, two weeks ago, the Germans already head the table with a full three-point advantage over the USA in second spot. German Chef d'Equipe Kurt Gravemeier will select his side for Friday's challenge from the almost overwhelming strength of Christian Ahlmann, Ludger Beerbaum, Marcus Ehning, Marco Kutscher and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.

Swiss Will Show the Way in Aachen Tomorrow; Margie Engle of U.S. Wins Today

The Swiss team will be first into the ring when the second leg of the 2006 Samsung Super League gets underway tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. local time in Aachen, Germany.

The ORDER OF GO tomorrow is as follows:
1. Switzerland; 2. The Netherlands; 3. Great Britain; 4. USA; 5. Germany; 6. France; 7. Ireland; 8. Sweden

The U.S got off to a good start on May 18 as Margie Engle on Hidden Creek's Perin won the Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia with no faults in a time of 75.26. Jeffrey Welles of the United States was fourth on Armani, owned by Kimmel-Yeager Equine, LLC, and Triton Ventures, with no faults and a time of 77.32.

WEG Endurance Team Hopefuls Prepare to Demonstrate their Abilities

With the 2006 World Equestrian Games just three months away, the top endurance riders in the U.S. are preparing to demonstrate their abilities in the hopes of earning a place on the U.S. Endurance Team. In order to be considered, each rider must compete at one of three FEI***/AERC dual-sanctioned 100-mile rides scheduled for May 20 in Oreana, ID; May 27 in Grand Island, MI; and June 11 in Ashland, MT. Members of the National Selection Committee will be present at each event to evaluate the competitors’ performances.

The 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games Vaulting Selection Trials Update

The Mission Pacific Vaulting Selection Trials were held May 13-14 in Somis, CA, and with only two more selection trials before the short list is named, the competition is tight, especially among the women.

A seasoned athlete at age 18, Megan Benjamin of Saratoga, CA led the women with a strong score of 8.608 on her horse, Faronia, a 17-hand Dutch Warmblood. Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Osborn of Menlo Park, CA; 22-year-old Mary McCormick of Woodside, CA; and 16-year-old Ali Divita of Redwood City, CA, were less than half a point behind Megan.

Courtney King Has Success with Two Horses at Windy Hollow Hunt Spring Dressage

Courtney King of Bedford, NY, riding the Dutch stallion Idocus owned by Christine McCarthy, won the Open Grand Prix at the Windy Hollow Hunt Spring Dressage show on Sunday, May 14, at the Sussex Fairgrounds in Augusta, NJ. King and the 16-year-old bay stallion by Equafor scored 62.708% from Judge Anne Rawle of Pennsylvania.

Langer Equestrian Group Jumps into its Woodside Hunter/Jumper Shows

Langer Equestrian Group (LEG), Inc., jumped into its first two of seven USEF “A” rated hunter/jumper shows of the 2006 show season at the beautiful Horse Park at Woodside. The Woodside Spring Preview (April 27-30) and the Woodside Spring Classic (May 4-7) attracted record numbers of competitors to the recently upgraded horse show facility at the Horse Park at Woodside. “We worked with the Horse Park’s Board of Directors and staff to make changes to the show facility that the competitors really wanted,” explained LEG President and CEO Larry Langer. The result was newly configured hunter rings that met with overwhelming enthusiasm. “Every year that I come to these shows the facility gets better and better,” said John Bragg, who had a number of horses and riders earn tri-color championships at the Woodside Spring Preview.

Rule Change Announcement for Competitions and Officials Regarding Accident Preparedness Plans

USEF would like all licensed competitions and officials to be aware of a rule change that became effective on April 1, 2006, requiring ALL competitions to have an accident preparedness plan in place whether the ambulance is on call or on competition grounds.

The U.S. Eventing Association has announced that Lamplight Equestrian Center will host the 2007-2009 American Eventing Championships, the national championships for the sport of eventing, which includes all levels of recognized competition, beginner novice through advanced.

Sweet Briar College Lures Retired UVa Riding Coach to Teaching Post

Glenn Moody, a highly respected hunter course designer and riding instructor, will join the riding program teaching staff at Sweet Briar College for the 2006/2007 academic year.

Last August, Moody retired from teaching and coaching at The Barracks, home of the University of Virginia riding team, to focus on course designing and judging.
