USEF Announces Show Jumping Squad for 2008 FEI World Cup Final

Following the last World Cup Qualifiers, which were held in Tampa, FL, and San Juan Capistrano, CA, 10 riders will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Rolex FEI World Cup Final (seven from the U.S. East Coast League and three from the U.S. West Coast League). To be held in Goteborg, Sweden, April 23-27, the Final showcases the world’s best show jumping riders, who qualify by accumulating points throughout the competition year at designated FEI events in one of the FEI worldwide leagues. Kent Farrington had a lock on the East Coast League with 107 points after winning three of the 12 East Coast Qualifiers. Rich Fellers won two of 11 qualifiers offered in the West and topped that League with 95 points.

J. Michael Plumb to be First Equestrian Inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

Karch Kiraly, three-time U.S. Olympian in volleyball (1984, 1988 and 1996) and three-time gold medalist, leads the distinguished Class of 2008 that will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by Allstate. The induction ceremony will take place June 19 in Chicago. The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Class of 2008 is comprised of nine Olympians, one Paralympian, an Olympic Coach, Veteran, Team and Special Contributor.

Varsity Equestrian National Championships Kicks Off

The seventh annual Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC) began on Thursday, April 17, at the Heart O’ Texas Fairgrounds. South Carolina entered the show as the defending overall national champion.

United States Dressage Federation Welcomes New All-Breeds Participating Registries/Organizations

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) welcomes all of it’s new and returning all-breeds participating registries/organizations (POs). The newly added POs for the 2008 competition season include: the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, the Fell Pony Society of North America, the United States P.R.E. Association, the Canadian Horse Breeders Association, the Friesian Sporthorse Association, the Friesian Heritage Horse & Sport Horse International, and the Nokota Horse Conservancy.

Charlotte Jumper Classic, CSI***** Wrap-Up

In some of the most exciting show jumping action that the United States has seen, it was Laura Kraut of Wellington, FL, and Anthem who stayed clear through three rounds to win the $500,000 Grand Prix of Charlotte, CSI***** for the Charlotte Bobcats Cup. Brazil's Rodrigo Pessoa and Rufus finished second, while Chris Kappler of New Jersey was third on VDL Oranta. Ben Maher of Great Britain with Rolette rounded out the group that competed in the jump-off and finished in fourth place.

FEI Bureau Meeting Wrap-Up

The last day of the week in Interlaken, Switzerland, during which all FEI Technical Committees convened, saw one last meeting—that of the FEI Bureau. The Bureau heard extensive reports from all the committees, which presented their activities and three-year strategic goals along with a number of plans linked to education and development.

Susan Dutta Retires Gumshoes DC at the 2008 Winter Equestrian Festival

Top FEI competitor Susan Dutta retired her famous grand prix partner of many years, Gumshoes DC, a 17-year-old Dutch gelding in a touching ceremony held in the International ring at the Zada Enterprises CDI show in Wellington. Her husband, Tim Dutta, son Timmy, and groom Robbie Sanderson accompanied Gumshoes into the ring where a well-deserved shawl of red flowers draped his shoulders.

Longtime California Vet Dr. William "Bill" Nissen Passes Away

Occasionally a story comes along that is worth telling, no matter how many tears it takes to write it. This is one of those stories, dear to our heart and the hearts of thousands of show jumping enthusiasts on the West Coast, as well as across this nation. It is information that people who loved this man would want to know and the family has asked for it to be sent along.

Dr. William “Bill” Nissen passed away on Sunday night at his ranch in Sheridan, CA, after spending one of ‘those’ days that, to a horseman, was just as he would want it at the end of his life—peaceful and doing what he loved the best.

Saddlebred Futurity Grace Period Deadline is Friday, April 25

The futurity grace period deadline to nominate mares and stallions for 2008 foals is Friday, April 25. Nomination forms are available for download from the association's website at www.saddlebred.com/Prize-forms.

The Kentucky Amateur, Kentucky and National Futurity programs paid over $272,000 to participants in 2007.

Event: Zada Enterprises, LLC, Dressage by the Bay Series I & II

What: Recognized by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) as a rated show series, Dressage by the Bay Series I & II consists of two back-to-back events. These events qualify riders for the Great American Insurance Group Regional Championships and the series is also a USDF Breeder's Championship Qualifier. New this year are the Dressage Sport Horse Breeding Classes and the Individual Breed Classes, which will kick off Series I. Other sponsors include Hampton Green Farm and Equistride International.

Fortune Commercial Properties Becomes the Official Commercial Realty Company of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

The World Games 2010 Foundation announced that Fortune Commercial Properties, a Lexington-based company, as the Official Commercial Realty Company of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. As part of the partnership, Fortune will provide 10,000 square feet of warehouse space and 6,000 square feet of office space for the World Games 2010 Foundation, as well as a financial contribution in support of the 2010 Games. The space is expected to be used for storage and as a center of operations for the 6,000-person volunteer program.

Four-Time Rolex CCI**** Winner Kim Severson to Autograph Breyer Model Horse Benefiting Equestrian Land Conservation at Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event

2004 Olympic Silver medalist Kim Severson is teaming up with the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource (ELCR), Breyer and Bit of Britain to promote the conservation of land for horses and horse-related activity. Severson will be signing the ELCR Breyer benefit model at Practical Horseman’s booth in the Sponsor Village on Thursday or Friday of Rolex. Announcement of the exact time for the autograph session will come on Wednesday once Severson learns her riding time for the dressage portion of this year’s Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. The announcement will be posted on ELCR’s website at www.elcr.org, at the Bit of Britain and Practical Horseman booths in the Sponsor Village.

Hundreds Attend Fundraiser for Olympian Darren Chiacchia; Equestrian Aid Foundation Continues to Raise Funds

Hundreds of people attended a fundraiser last week in Tallahassee, FL, for critically injured Olympic event rider Darren Chiacchia. Well-wishers not only raised funds, but gave much needed support to Chiacchia's family who flew in from Buffalo, NY, for the event that featured a video tribute, silent auction and a musical freestyle performed by Robert Dover on Chiacchia’s Pan American Games Gold-medal partner Windfall. In addition to the incredible fundraiser orchestrated by Carol Dover at her WC Dover Farm, more than 400 contributions have been made to the emergency fund designated for Chiacchia at the Equestrian Aid Foundation (EAF).
