USEF Announces 2008 Applicant Stewards’ Clinic Sessions The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has established a goal of providing more accessible applicant clinic sessions to be held during the 2008 competition year for individuals interested in becoming a licensed steward with the Federation. Two applicant sessions will accompany the continuing education clinic for Category 1 and Category 2 stewards. American Vaulting Association Matches United States Hunter Jumper Association Donation to USEF Youth Council The American Vaulting Association board, at its recent annual meeting, voted to match the United States Hunter Jumper Association’s $1,500 donation to the USEF Youth Council, announced at the recent USEF Inaugural Youth Convention in Lexington. AVA President Nancy Stevens-Brown and AVA Board Member and USEF Youth Council Member Megan Benjamin led the charge. Paso Fino Youth Mundial Moved to Colombia The Youth Mundial has been moved to Medellin, Colombia. The Dominican Republic was not able to fulfill the responsibility, so Confepaso voted to move it to Colombia. There is some interest among youth and their families to represent the U.S. at this international competition. Beezie Madden and Authentic Win $200,000 CN WorldWide Grand Prix In a dramatic jump-off featuring the best show jumping athletes in the world, Beezie Madden of Cazenovia, NY, and Authentic claimed victory in the $200,000 CN WorldWide Grand Prix during Week Nine, the CSI****W CN WorldWide, of the CN Winter Equestrian Festival, presented by Zimmerman Advertising, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. $1-Million Gift is the Largest Ever to the UVM Morgan Horse Farm The University of Vermont Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, VT, has received a pledge of $1-million from the Amy E. Tarrant Foundation. The gift, the largest ever to the historic facility, will be used to create an Amy E. Tarrant Endowed Fund for the Morgan Horse Farm, with $800,000 to establish the endowment and $200,000 designated for current operating needs. Earnings on the endowment will provide funding for the farm in perpetuity. Richard Spooner and Cristallo Win the $200,000 Invitational Grand Prix of the Desert to Close out the 2008 HITS Desert Circuit Richard Spooner has won a lot of grand prix classes in his career. In fact, the HITS Desert Circuit's all-time leading money winner now has 104 victory gallops under his belt, six of which are from this season at Thermal. But Spooner's blue-ribbon performance from Sunday's $200,000 Invitational Grand Prix of the Desert marks the single largest purse that he has won to date. Seminar for Carriage Pleasure Driving Judges Offered in Pennsylvania The American Driving Society’s clinic for licensed pleasure driving judges, technical delegates and learner judges is open to any United States Equestrian Federation officials interested in continuing their education in the carriage pleasure driving division. The clinic will be held May 18, 2008, at the 26th Annual My Lady’s Manor Pleasure Driving Show in York County, PA. Morris Excellence in Equitation With the glamour and pressure of riding before judges of Olympians under lights in the International Arena, Maggie McAlary won the inaugural George H. Morris Excellence in Equitation at the CN Winter Equestrian Festival presented by Zimmerman Advertising last Friday night. New Round of Major Improvements for PBIEC After WEF 2008 Equestrian Sport Productions, LLC, announced Wednesday a preliminary plan for a new round of major improvements at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) to be completed by the "Celebration of the Horse" event in early December and well before the start of the 2009 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Darren Chiacchia Injured at Red Hills Horse Trials; Remains Hospitalized Darren Chiacchia of Springville, NY and Ocala, FL, suffered a serious fall Saturday March 15, 2008, at the Red Hills Horse Trials in Tallahassee, FL. Darren was riding Baron Verdi at the Preliminary level, and the pair fell at the fifth cross-country fence. Darren was airlifted to Tallahassee Medical Center where he remains in critical condition. Baron Verdi was uninjured in the fall. Darren sustained a severe head injury, and also contusions to both lungs with multiple rib fractures and a partially collapsed lung. Initial concerns about spinal injury were alleviated after extensive specialized testing. His pulmonary function is improving, but the major concern remains the head injury. His overall condition shows definite improvement, but he remains unconscious. On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Darren developed a fever and pneumonia, causing him to be re-intubated, and he is now breathing with a ventilator. He continues to receive superior medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. The Chiacchia family wishes to extend their appreciation for all the concern and support. “We keep Darren and his friends and family in our thoughts and prayers,” said USEF President David O’Connor, who was at the competition.
