Montgomery and Dutton Win the Golden Cups at the Red Hills Horse Trials
Red Hills Horse Trials in Tallahassee, FL, the first of this year's 2008 Adequan USEA Gold Cup events, finished up last weekend with packed crowds, blue skies and a fabulous day of show jumping.
Clark Montgomery and the steady Thoroughbred gelding Up Spirit, owned by Montgomery and William and Holly Becker, put together a stellar ride to finish off his weekend at the top of the CIC***W division (the advanced division for the Gold Cup). Montgomery and the nine-year-old English Thoroughbred started out the event in third place, after scoring a 44.7 in dressage, and then leapt up to first after Saturday's cross-country ride left him with only 12.8 time faults. They had a rail in-hand heading into the show jumping ring, and second place finishers Karen O' Connor and Rebecca Broussard's Thoroughbred gelding Allstar dropped two rails, as did Montgomery and Up Spirit, so the title was theirs.

Darren Chiacchia Injured at Red Hills Horse Trials; Remains Hospitalized
Darren Chiacchia of Springville, NY and Ocala, FL, suffered a serious fall Saturday March 15, 2008, at the Red Hills Horse Trials in Tallahassee, FL. Darren was riding Baron Verdi at the Preliminary level, and the pair fell at the fifth cross-country fence. Darren was airlifted to Tallahassee Medical Center where he remains in critical condition. Baron Verdi was uninjured in the fall.
Darren sustained a severe head injury, and also contusions to both lungs with multiple rib fractures and a partially collapsed lung. Initial concerns about spinal injury were alleviated after extensive specialized testing. His pulmonary function is improving, but the major concern remains the head injury. His overall condition shows definite improvement, but he remains unconscious.
On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Darren developed a fever and pneumonia, causing him to be re-intubated, and he is now breathing with a ventilator. He continues to receive superior medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. The Chiacchia family wishes to extend their appreciation for all the concern and support.
“We keep Darren and his friends and family in our thoughts and prayers,” said USEF President David O’Connor, who was at the competition.
An emergency designated fund has been have set up in Darren's name. To donate, please visit www.eventrider.com.
